Fly tipping - Haringey's reporting system
The mess shown above appeared outside 180 Wightman Road, I think it was overnight on 6th/7th December. I reported it to Haringey's online service at 10.22 yesterday (8th). Haringey reported to this effect at 11.44 this morning (9th) and I can confirm that the mess has been removed. The website is: http://www.haringey.gov.uk/contact/report-it
For some kinds of report, including fly tipping, you must create an online account.

Zena and I were once near Pimlico tube station. I nearly tripped on a badly broken paving stone. Open an account with Westminster? No. I used Fix My Street website.
A few years ago cyclists on HoL were concerned about dangerous potholes in Green Lanes on a stretch of road in Hackney where some street lights were out. Lights which were working were partly obscured by tree branches from Finsbury Park.
Open an account with Hackney? Stuff that. I imagined a cyclist going under a truck. So I phoned Hackney's night emergency service and spoke to a helpful person who lived in Hackney and knew the road. He got someone out to do a temporary filling of holes and started the process to fix the lights.
Of course that was in the olden days when the default was still human.
Another thing, Dick, if Haringey wants to catch dumpers, the dumpers need to know there's a risk of being caught. Preferably with some witnesses who aren't scared to go to Court. Or someone opening the bags and spotting some addresses. People reporting dumped rubbish? Great. I expect you and I do it a lot. But please let's not imagine it will clean up the borough or change the dumping culture.

I don't know why they want one to register for some types of report but not others. Perhaps it is so that habitual fly tippers can't simply dump their stuff and call in the council anonymously to clear it up! Sad to say, I have never seen a fly tipper in the act. Presumably, the people who clear up the rubbish for the Council could conduct forensic inspection but I somehow doubt whether it would be much use for the purpose of prosecution. You're right, what we need is witnesses to the crime.
Come to think of it, the street light above this spot was not working so maybe that why the spot was chosen. I must now report the street light.
Not all my reports have had such a rapid response as this one. Reporting grafitti on the wall of my house was very effective and a guy showed up with a van full of miscellaneous paints and painted it out within 3 days. However when I reported that a lorry had smashed one of those slopes where wheel chair users can cross the road, the e-mail response was quick but the action was not. In fact two months went by even after I sent a reminder.
By contrast one report I made about a footway problem was immediately passed on by Haringey to Network Rail because it turned out to be their responsibility. Somewhat to my surprise, it was fixed within 48 hours.

At the Council where I work it is, at least partly, to prevent malicious reporting. By which I mean there are individuals with too much time and not enough grey matter that will make spurious reports just to waste the Council's time. Hundreds of them in fact. It is also actually a customer service issue in that people can check the status of their reported issues and be provided with updates etc.

Malicious Reporting
This is really interesting. Not least because I never once heard the term in sixteen years as a councillor. Nor, since then as a member of a residents association routinely reporting dumping incidents. I also searched HoL and couldn't find it. Nor was a Google search helpful.
I've worked closely with Haringey Council staff and can't recall being told about some making spurious reports to waste the Council's time. (I'm not saying it doesn't happen.)
What I have occasionally heard from a member of staff is a suspicion that some people are cheeky enough to dump waste and then report it to the Council for collection!
I've also been told that stuff I reported has been reported previously by someone else and cleared by the time I sent in my report. I don't know whether or not this was counted in the stats as spurious or malicious.
One time I saw a truck coming to collect dumped waste before I'd had time to report it. The driver got a big thankyou!

P.S. I'd appreciate any helpful links to reports on the website of other Councils dealing with the "malicious reporting" issue.

Strange not to discuss in reports what you and Antoinette seem both to have both experienced as a significant problem.
If people don't at least acknowledge it and - even if obliquely - discuss it, how can experience be shared and solutions tried out and evaluated?Right now I'm completely unclear what examples of these malicious reports look like. Let alone how frequent or problematic they might be. As you know, without some clarity and precision in defining a problem, it's hard to begin solving it.

The term "malicious reporting" is my own. Other people may call it something else. But trust me it used to happen - a lot. Since the requirement to log in to make reports was instigated, it happens much less. That is a step to protect the public purse, so why are you knocking it?

I've used the Love Clean Streets app a few times to report things - including the same slope you mention. Flytipping and dead animals is usually dealt with quickly, but road and pavement issues not so much.
It would be useful if the app had the function to create a recurring report - as soon as the bed base is cleared at the top of our road, another one appears! I don't understand why people do this - Haringey will collect mattresses and various other bulky items for free.
I note the website lets you report traffic offences like driving in bus lanes - the app doesn't seem to have this option.
