From Haringey Council:
When it snows the council has to focus on gritting pavements in town centres and main roads – so we can’t always grit pavements in side roads.
Would you be interested in becoming a snow volunteer and help to clear snow where you live?
The council will provide advice on how you can do this, we’ll supply snow shovels and grit to help you to help yourself and your neighbours keep your pavements clear.
Come along to:
The Civic Centre,
High Road, London N22,
Committee Room 8,
on Wednesday 29 October 2014 between 6.00pm and 8.00pm to find out more.

Heard about this. Volunteers gritting the roads now? Hmmmmm.
No just the pavements. Damned if I'd grit a road.
Abi- you make a slightly sceptical noise/comment, but a few years ago when it snowed heavily roads around the Ladder and Gardens were much overlooked as the council in typical a British fashion struggled to sort out the more arterial highways.
So, a few of us got our own shovels out and started clearing our paths/streets and the passage way. Folks like Malcolm Box and David Schmitz (among others) lead a spirited charge and did a good job of organising and mobilising folks to make what would have become lethal ice sheets passable again. So I reckon this idea has some merit, especially if they are happy to give us access to tools that may make the job easier. They are only helping us do what we would probably have to do ourselves anyway.
Think of it as our Labour council's contribution to Cameron's Big Society!
How many shovels have they got? They're free right? So I can sell mine as if it were my council house...
Ah good, this gives me an excuse to encourage everyone to watch the first 5 minutes or so of this video from Sweden on snow clearance and why all councils in England (probably) get this wrong (ignore the rather dull title by the way)
Thanks. Too late. I bought my own shovel 4 years ago and I just sow the front of my house every year with kitchen salt. Good idea though.
Cost wise, probably cheaper to pay a man to grit a road than to give a shovel each.
I'm going to this on behalf of the FoHP. I'd like company.
