Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
The Banner
Just seen the banner and my opinion is that its pretty damn crap.
Why?
You still see much of the shoddy paintwork on the bridge.
The banner is all wrinkled.
The overall design is so crap.
I could go on but I'll give everyone else chance instead.
Oh well.

David, you just agreed with someone who said they didn't real feel strongly about the issue, didn't know much about it and was a bit surprised at all the feeling around it. For God's sake, grow some cojones and climb into the red cabal across the road! They're never going to let you in anyway, you've stood against David Lammy.

Thanks. I share a similar level of knowledge about council workings that most people have on here actually - I was just trying to put things into perspective. Apparently agreeing with me means lacking cojones. Well if having them means having a go at other people like you are doing with me indirectly, and a bit below more directly with Andy completely out of context, then I am proud of not having any - and actually as a woman I don't believe you need balls to be effective or interesting in what you argue in an online forum nor for anything else in life, and that being reasonable and calm is actually a good thing.

Germana (& Hugh), David Schmitz is an opposition councillor. I don't see the point in him having been elected if he is not going to oppose. My full name is my HoL I'd, David knows who I am and where I live (and I'm sure is taking this in the spirit it's intended). I'm not sure Andy knows where I live but he certainly knows who I am and is not afraid of a pretty shouty argument in the pub himself.

John (McMullan), you are no doubt right that both Andy and David are big boys and quite able to deal with a little robustness. I think I'm also right in saying that there is some sort of 'real world' personal relationship between you and them that gives your comments context for them (They know that in the real world you're a really nice affable guy). But imagine someone reading those comments who's not aware of that context. They may well feel that your comments were overly assertive, perhaps even insulting. That gives the debate a very different tone and as Germana says not only puts people off contributing but from even reading.

How many more years do you think you'll be saying this exact same thing to me "if you were not so <insert latest worrying adjective> there would be more HoL members reading and contributing, more often"? You don't get the enthusiasm without the enthusiasm. Good on you for taking it so far off topic too BTW.

I've just read all the posts about the banner! I agree it has its limitations and isn't what we all would ideally want, but just getting the banner at all during the last few months of the last financial year was hard work. As you all probably know Dasos Maliotis was the Neighbourhood Manager, and was working with the Green Lanes Strategy Group on this. Dasos held a small budget for the banner which had to be used by the end of the financial year. To make sure we didn't lose the money, Dasos had to get the banner underway. He worked with the Council's contracted company for advertising who already had the necessary permissions from Network Rail. And as he was leaving he wanted to make sure it was in process before he went and Neighbourhood Management closed down. The group wanted only local companies to advertise. The GLSG was told that income from the ads would be used to build up a future banner fund.
From memory I think there was general consensus that commissioning an artist would have been really good - but the cruel fact of the cuts, the end of the financial year closing in and Dasos leaving meant that any chance of going through the formal commissioning process for an artist, selecting designs etc and managing it was minimal. Having to follow rules and procedures when managing the money is a central fact of life in local government, and it is time consuming. Liaising with Network Rail is even more time consuming. The time was running out so there had to be a compromise. I'm not trying here to excuse the outcome - but to explain it and set the record straight.
Nilgun Canver - the Chair of the GLSG - explained all this to the meeting and the group reps who were there would have heard all this. What I am doing now is tracking down where the income from the ads is within the Council, so we can start planning ahead. Currently the only budget for this or any other banner is through the advertising. We don't have a Neighbourhood Manager anymore, so keeping a handle on this will be more difficult, but the new Area Committee is meeting soon and no doubt this will be a hot topic!

So baisicly ther was some money left over to get a banner to cover a bridge many people did not want covering.
As there was not much money and not much time and a very naff banner was chosen to cover a beautifil if somwhet shoddy bridge that a significan number of peole did not want covered. in order to have this bridege covered for later years advertising space which no wanted used as advertising space was sold to at least one business with rather dubious past of blighting Harringay with illegal advertising.
Would it not have been a better idea for the excess money just to have been swallowed up by LBoH, at the end of the finacial year, put back into the borough elsewhere and we have no banner and no advertising at all.
I appreciate there are cuts but that is no excuse for LBoH to pimp out landmarks for corporate sponsorship.
Why not have our Parks dyed with a Subway Logo, parking enforcemnet officers can be sponsored by Yassir Halim, whilst the mayoral car can have Lido as it livery.
Where will this stop?
And why was no one offerd the opprtunity to adopt the bridge?
