Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
The Banner
Just seen the banner and my opinion is that its pretty damn crap.
Why?
You still see much of the shoddy paintwork on the bridge.
The banner is all wrinkled.
The overall design is so crap.
I could go on but I'll give everyone else chance instead.
Oh well.

Thanks for your response
So baisicly ther was some money left over to get a banner to cover a bridge many people did not want covering.
As there was not much money and not much time and a very naff banner was chosen to cover a beautifil if somwhet shoddy bridge that a significan number of peole did not want covered. in order to have this bridege covered for later years advertising space which no wanted used as advertising space was sold to at least one business with rather dubious past of blighting Harringay with illegal advertising.
Would it not have been a better idea for the excess money just to have been swallowed up by LBoH, at the end of the finacial year, put back into the borough elsewhere and we have no banner and no advertising at all.
I appreciate there are cuts but that is no excuse for LBoH to pimp out landmarks for corporate sponsorship.
Why not have our Parks dyed with a Subway Logo, parking enforcemnet officers can be sponsored by Yassir Halim, whilst the mayoral car can have Lido as it livery.
Where will this stop?
And why was no one offerd the opprtunity to adopt the bridge?

I appreciate that it's in the eye of the beholder, but not sure I'd call the Harringay Bridge "beautiful" even if it were bannerless, graffiti free, painted and in better nick (it's got at least one leak that dripped rusty water on my shoulder when stuck in traffic underneath it the other day).
Suppose it could technically be described as a "landmark", given that it's quite large, but I'm not sure any tourist board would seek to define our area's USP through the medium of a bog-standard London railway bridge.

The money would have been better off being given back to the council to spend on parks, no? I can't believe you were so short sighted as to ram through this abomination because you "had to spend the money before the end of the year". I bet we could raise enough money on here and commission our own artist. The fact is you did this because you wanted to write "Green Lanes" on the bridge. Do you agree that it looks absolutely awful? I bet you're making more from the advertising than the banner cost too.

Who is 'we'? Where would the money have gone?

The money would have been swallowed up buy LBoh and used for other causes not necessarily for Harringay.
Perhaps for a specialist teaching assistant to visit a school to do a few days 1 to 1 training with a new TA who needs support working with a young child on the autistic spectrum.
Perhaps to fill a pothole,
Perhaps to by resources for a day centre.
Perhaps Books for a library
Perhaps a youth worker for a while
Perhaps a new seat for a swing
Perhaps a bin for a park
Perhaps a dog wardens uniform (do they wear a uniform?)
Perhaps overtime for social workers,
Perhaps Coffee for an ESOL group
Perhaps Council ID badges
a camera for an enforcement officer
Perhaps post-it notes, tape and staples
Perhaps to wine and dine local business to hear what haringey landmarks they would like to advertise on.
Who knows.

This is ridiculous - you are saying that we have to have a banner so you can have an income to pay for a future banner. How often do we have to say it ? - we don't want a banner, any banner, ever.

Andy Newman has already said (although I can't be bothered looking for where) that we need a banner or the bridge is constantly covered in graffiti. As this is the man who seemingly single handedly had the gardens gated with some dodgy traffic statistics I would take anything he says like that with a grain of salt (and much respect).

What happens when the banner gets graffitied? The last one did and the graffiti stayed up there for ever.

Here's another way of looking at this situation. I did a quick Google Street View survey of all Haringey's railway bridges WITHOUT advertising and those WITH advertising.
I guess we should feel special.

Some of Harringay loves the banner. Of course they do, They're businessmen. Who can blame them. They're here to make a living. I respect their viewpoint on that basis, but don't agree with them on this issue.
Next stop a rebrand to 'Harringay Village'?

I've choosen to boycott any business that advertises on the bridge.
