Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Help Save Pendarren House

Pendarren House Outdoor Centre is owned and maintained by Haringey council. It has been providing residential outdoor education courses since 1972. It is used by the majority of Haringey schools, both primary and secondary.

Haringey would like to cut the £220,000 subsidy which means that the Centre can offer subsidised places to Haringey children. Without the subsidy, the centre would be making a loss which mean Haringey would get rid of it, leasing to a private provider (or even selling off the building). This means costs would rise, making it prohibitive for a lot of children in the borough. As a teacher, and a parent, I have seen the positive impact it has had on children. The centre provides very wide range of experiences that have such positive impact on self esteem, confidence and achievement. I have spoken to parents and even grandparents who attended Pendarren as children and have heard how much it has meant to them.  It would be a shame to lose such an wonderful facility that has been part of education in Haringey for over forty years.

The consultation period ends on Sunday.

I have been to Pendarren three times accompanying school trips. The activities are picked by the schools from a wide variety of activities (which have been updated in line with changes to the new curriculum). The instructors are not old and grumpy (they are all aged 30 or below, except for three). In my experience, they are all very accommodating - we have had bonfires and fireworks. The kids I have taken (many of whom may not have another similar enriching opportunity) and my own child and her friends have raved about their experience at Pendarren. The activities are tailored to the schools and it is up to the schools how they use the centre. The children at my school and my children's school, the chance to go to Pendarren is one of the highlights of their school life. Compared to PGL, it is more like a youth hostel experience. I like how they give the children responsibilities such keeping their rooms clean as well as helping out with serving and cleaning up after meals. There is little difference in cost, but it is more affordable (due to subsidies provided by Haringey) to ensure that children whose family may not afford it, can go at a much reduced price.

I spent a good 20 minutes filling out my carefully considered answers, and was then greeted with a 'page not found'.

Did either of you guys get the same?

As the survey is anonymous, I guess there's no way to know if anything worked.

Yes I did but I'm still assuming it worked. Can report probs with the website though just in case its malfunctioning.

My GB has discussed the possibility of using the PP to subsidised children. Has any other school done this?

I don't know how the funding is worked out at NHP but children entitled to FSM are subsidised.

Generally FSM pupils are charged around £100. In addition, schools will try to make sure there are places for children who would really benefit from a residential trip such as young carers. It is up to to the school to decide how they subsidise and many schools aim to keep costs down so that as many children as possible can go.

Hello, does anyone know the latest on the proposed closure of Pendarren House? 

I guess I missed out on the consultation period. 

My daughter could miss out in Year 6 next year if they close it. So angry.

I have heard rumours that the decision has been taken to outsource the management of Pendarren to a private company. I have not heard anything official.
