Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Santander ATM opposite The Salisbury tampered with. AGAIN.

Hi all,

Second time I've seen this happen to the Santander ATM on Green Lanes (opposite the Salisbury).

Card goes in, you're prompted to press the button corresponding to the amount of cash you'd like to withdraw. Usually less than 100 quid, right? ... So you try to press one of the buttons on the left hand side for 10/20/40 pounds, only to realise that the buttons have been covered in slightly larger bits of grey plastic. It's impossible to depress the buttons so you're forced to either use the buttons on the right hand side (withdrawing a minimum of 200 quid),or do the sensible thing by taking your card without withdrawing.

I have reported both incidents to the police via 101. I believe that someone is watching whether or not you choose to withdraw the larger amount of cash. It's right next to St Ann's Road bus stop, so people can watch the ATM users pretty inconspicuously if they're standing at the bus shelter.

I've attached a photo showing the false buttons. My second experience of this occurred at 7.30pm this evening and I reported it to both Santander and the police immediately.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I can't believe that cash machine is still being used given its notoriety. I would drive to sainsburys before using that one, it's always been dodgy.
It's notoriety? Please elaborate, I'm really interested to hear its reputation.
Always had a reputation because of its proximity to the bus stop. I have always been warned off using that cash machine as its played host to a few cash machine scams, some people hang around as if they're waiting for a bus but they're actually watching the machine.
Thanks, Geraldine. I feel most comfortable using Tesco, but sometimes I do just want a quick tenner! Thanks for your information.
Thanks Michael, I've never witnessed either of these techniques. Very illuminating, much appreciated.

There have in fact been eleven posts about Santander cash machine issues since 2010. Check the last of the three tags I've added beneath your post.

Whoa! Considering the frequency of these issues, I'm shocked that they've not considered installing CCTV above the machine... Or removed the ATM entirely. It's putting people in danger.

Thanks for embedding the photo, btw.
Blimey, this machine has clearly been victim to various, unique scams. I appreciate your input, HOLers, thank you.

Same thing happened to my partner Monday 6am on same cash point. Card got swallowed, no-one else around apart from a small (possibly South American) young guy hanging around, turned his head away quickly when my partner looked around at him.  He kept looking over and appeared to be hiding behind the bus stop appearing to see if my partner had left the machine. He also didn't want to use the cash point or get on any of the 3 buses that went past.  Bank told my partner not to leave the cash point for a couple of minutes until the card and cash were taken (ie "swallowed") back in by the cash machine.

This has been going on at this machine for years.  Agreed, better off going to the Sainsbury's cash points or getting cash-back.

Good grief, your partner had a close shave. I've been a victim of debit card cloning recently (and very thankfully I had all transactions reversed and credited) - I wonder if my use of this ATM was related.

I've also reported this machine in the past; on two occasions it stated that the money was paid out to me, and on one occasion the money was deducted from my account, however no cash came out of the machine. I was eventually refunded but it was a pain.

If I need cash during the day I use the machine inside Santander which feels more secure.
