Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Wightman road traffic lights - when did at a red light stop becoming compulsory?
So time for a bit of a rant / try to find out the best councillor to write to.
The traffic lights (or more specifically crossing them) by Harringay station have become my complete bugbear, No matter the time of day or night the pattern is thus:
Push button at traffic lights
See car in distance
Lights turn from green to yellow immediately on button press
Car in Distance speeds up
Car goes over the bump in the road as the green man starts flashing
So my questions is, when did a red light stop meaning that the car should stop, and when did yellow start to mean speed up?
A car actually had to skid to a halt the other day when I walked out when the green man was flashing, and then had the audacity to have a go at me. I've simply taken to shouting its a red light at drivers, if you see a crazy man shouting, that's me...
Now, if we were in the middle of the country, with a speed limit of 60mph on a main road I'd understand stopping might be difficult, but it's a 20mph limit, and going through the red light only gets you to the next queue of traffic maybe 10 seconds earlier.
Who is the best person to write to with regards to this? The council could make an absolute killing, so it would be in their interest of putting a camera there?
And.... relax...

Everybody please note that Amber means stop too - unless it would be dangerous to do so.
We have the same problem at Hampden Road. I actually chased after a driver and told him " red means stop " He replied " For you maybe, but not for me "

I've recently has this happen twice when crossing there with a buggy and two small children. For some reason drivers don't take that red light seriously.

Yep same happens at Hampden Road lights on Wightman. All the time. A car nearly ran into me and my toddler when we were crossing because of it.

I've had numerous close calls at the Harringay station lights too, lucky I still have a turn of pace or wouldn't be here to tell the tale. The other day a driver sailed straight through while talking on her mobile and disappeared off apparently unaware the lights even exist

Just to concur with others and to add that this happens at the Fairfax Road crossing as well. That makes three points along Wightman Road where cameras are needed. I've often thought of standing by one of these crossing with my own camera and recording the cars that IGNORE the red light. I am another shouter.

Had the same thing Col. Last time I had to jump back after crossing one lane to find a car heading towards me in the other lane while the lights were still on red. According to the driver I was a stupid f****** c*** for getting in the way of his car. A camera there would be fantastic.
Also, it is used a lot by kids (accompanied and alone) to get too and from South Harringay school and the library and a lot of kids who use the train to get to school from Harringay station.

Time to shoot 'em.
But only with a speed gun and a video camera of course. Posting the edited video on YouTube would be nice, as well. Sounds Iike it might prevent a very serious accident.

Yup, they do it all the time. Contact the SNT and see if an officer in plain clothes can stand by the lights with you and observe.

So I'm not the only one who's had that experience on Wightman Road then! I have also seen cars go through red lights as though they don't exist. Time for cameras I think!

If it is happening at particular sites for traffic lights, and not on others, it would be interesting to find out why.

Ad-hoc surveys of drivers produce reasons as in Michael A's post above..... there'll always be some scoff-laws.

Not so much big brother state for compliance, more safety for those crossing at a green man... The few comments from others stating trouble when crossing with children should get the warning signs flashing - people simply ignore the fact a red light means stop. But, whether the psychology of a zebra crossing vs. green light changes attitudes is beyond my knowledge, but an interesting point to raise. Although I tend to comply to both, even as a cyclist, well someone's got to haven't they...
