Now that Mostly harmless has arrived, OAE's role is redundant. As superannuated supernumerary I shall now retire as Mostly armless can do the job with so much greater gusto and panache. For the phrase 'yummy mummies and faddy daddies', much thanks. I think now I'll go out and purchase my first car. RECLAIM THE STREETS!
Don't retire yet OAE from keeping us on our Grauniad reading toes.
I fear reading the rest of the thread that MH may have jumped the shark.
I was waiting for an "only kidding" with a twinkly 'smiley' at the end, or even a "have a great scooting down the hill kids!".
Wow, you have been steaming over this for a month?
Sadly, my life is too short so I cannot take time to respond point by point, but feel free to look out for me on Sunday and we can discuss it face to face, rather than hiding behind the anonymity of an online fourum Mr/Mrs Harmless. No doubt you will recognise me, I will be the fat numpty in a high viz vest chattering with all the other chatterers in our street.
Excellent rant, good work. It's full of inaccuracies and reads as if any slight inconvenience to yourself totally overrules anyone else's considerations but I wouldn't worry about that. Is it really that difficult to walk 50 yards once a month (given there's no guarantee that you'd be able to park directly outside your friend's house anyway).
What is your view on electric cars using the roads? They don't pay "road tax" so I assume you think they should pull over to the side and get out of your way. How about the unemployed, they don't contribute to the upkeep of roads through general taxation so I assume they can't use the roads.
And as you seem to be a fan, a Guardian article for you. Roads were not built for cars
" Road Tax was abolished in 1937 "
Yes the licence fee goes into general taxation revenue. But If I use a car on the road I have to pay for a tax disc.
If I don't use a car on the road, I don't have to pay for one.
What else is that but a road tax ?
Your tax disc is a tax on tailpipe CO2 emissions, you are charged if your car produces more than 100gm per km - that is why most modern and all electric cars are not charged for their tax disc
But if I keep my car on the road, but don't use it, I don't produce any emissions. But I still have to pay my disc. The scale of tax according to emissions is ( rightly ) designed to encourage people to buy cars with low emissions. cf zero-rated for VAT.
