Problem with Sainsbury’s Identifying and Prioritising Vulnerable People for Online Shopping

Hello neighbours,

I am one the people with many underlying health issues, who received the official letter from the government identifying me as a vulnerable person. Theoretically, supermarkets should have received the government database of people who received this. Therefore, as a long-standing Sainsbury’s online shopper I should be on the Sainsbury’s list prioritising me, but I am not.

Having tried to phone them many times to explain, there is no opportunity to talk to a real person or an opportunity to email anyone. All I get is the attached screenshot saying that they can’t identify me as a vulnerable person.

If anyone has any ideas of how to contact them I’d really appreciate this. Publishing it may also help others facing same issue.

At the moment, I am lucky to have good friends and family locally who are fit enough to help me, but it would be good to have a back up plan in case they fall ill. Needless to say, I’ll also contact the support group on HOL if I need to. (Good to see HOL and volunteers doing this).

Thanks all. Stay safe

I tried to PM on twitter and it took me to the government website so that was a waste of time

Have you tried ringing Sainsbury’s vulnerable person’s hotline. The phone number is different from the usual one we use to contact the store.

This is 0800 052 5500.

Yes, but none of the computerised options give you the option to explain this and no option to speak to a real person to explain this to them

I couldn’t get through tried for a week so gave up

I had this. You need to ring the usual number (0800 328 1700) and choose option 1. They often cut you off as you say, and tell you they’re too busy to answer, BUT. If you keep trying, eventually you will get through to someone! I’ve had to call 3 times (honestly, about 170 other times were attempts when I was cut off) and in those 3 successful calls I had to wait for 30 minutes, 15 minutes and 12 minutes respectively.

then you can explain that you need to go on the list. Their list is slightly different to the governments list apparently but I’m sure with any serious underlying health problem you’ll fit on both.

do keep trying though. I found easiest to get through around 3pm if that helps.

I tried all times and can’t get through so have given up. No one really cares about vulnerable people only unless you have a lung problem. What about agoraphobics, what about disabled? What about those who care for those listed in isolation to protect them? No one cares let us starve

I agree with you and the way this has been handled by all supermarkets is shocking. I’ve tried for days to contact Sainsbury’s, Tesco but never get through. The vulnerable government list is a waste of time. You are only classed as vulnerable if you have one of the listed conditions and require a food box. My mum is on the list but I’m not although I’m agoraphobic, I’m isolating for her but because I’ve always done the shopping my online registration is on my name not hers. What online stores should have done is prioritise those who already do regular online shopping like Ocado have done to those on their smart pass. I can’t complain to Sainsbury’s as I don’t always do Sainsbury’s shop online but Tesco well they are worse. I’ve had to rely on friends and carers but because I’m lactose intolerant I can’t get a lot of the things I need locally and no one will go to a main store for me. I’m stuck but will survive

The problem I've had with Sainsburys is just using their website. I try to click on groceries and it keeps taking me back to the info page. I give up with them.

I'm also registered with Tesco. I did manage to get my last shop via their priority list but today when I looked (again, daily) there were none. But there were some for the normal delivery within the next few days. Too early for me, I want a later delivery but one that I can rely on.

I've a feeling that the priority slots are much more popular than the normal ones so all I can say is just keep looking, it's pot luck out there.

I’m told by family who are also shielding that Asda could be a good one to try - they seem to release slots at different times of day and not so far into the future so a bit more helpful.

In terms of getting help with getting shopping in, have you contacted your local Mutual Aid group? They can all be found here: https://covidmutualaid.org/local-groups/ and you may well find a volunteer willing to go to Sainsburys for you :-)

Thanks all for supportive messages. Just posted a different thread about Iceland slots available for vulnerable peopl, to inform anyone having similar difficulties to me

Just a quick note. I have managed to go onto Tesco website and there are a lot of online delivery slots for next week. Whoop whoop finally can get some food in and lactose free..that’s if when they arrive they are in stock..a happy man at last.

I did mention that earlier. Happy for you though. It almost feels like winning the jackpot!
