Hi all,
Is it just me or has Wightman Road now become an absolute death trap for us cyclists with the jutty out bits that enrage car drivers who swerve into us to avoid oncoming cars...?
Thinking a cycle track on part of pavement could be an answer... We don't take up as much space as a car parking half way across the pavement as it used to be...

Has anyone been able to figure out the point of the jutty out bits?
Yes, they are to slow down motor traffic. They do, a bit. But see above.
The jutty out bits are to mark the beginning and end of the new parking bays.
Until Haringey finally accepts that the car is no longer king in an Inner London borough, we'll have situations like this every time.
There are too many loud and well funded voices in their ear telling them that motor vehicles are a necessity.
Voting out the current council may well have an effect, but wouldn't make a difference if there's also a pro-motor mentality entrenched in the authority itself (I can't speak for that).
I'd love to just close the lot (including Green Lanes!) and see how it plays out - but across the city (and the world) you see people so wedded to the car, so desperate to use one, that they'd probably sit in traffic for hours without a second thought. Weird.
Who are the "too many loud and well funded voices in their ear telling them that motor vehicles are a necessity." ???
I suspect it's more to do with lacking a sophisticated understand of the problem and the available solutions. It's laziness and failure to keep up with developments in 21st urban transport. Wrong people in jobs; incompetence. Lack of political will. Out of touch, out of depth. Old guard.
I imagine it's the shop owners. When I queried why they were increasing parking provision on Turnpike Lane even though studies have shown that customers arriving by car tend to spend less the response I got from the Council was:
TfL have carried out lots of studies on this but regardless of the evidence base this isn't how the shop owners feel. ... The business community have strong opinions that need to be considered
Nail on head.
Because the shop owners don't feel something is true means it's tough luck, essentially.
Urgh I'm so tired of hearing this old weak excuse from the council. Some of us have a different 'strong opinion that needs to be considered', namely: my lung health and that of my children is being destroyed directly because of the cowardly and incompetent actions of the council! Other councils are leading the way whilst Haringey continues to act like this 1998. I hope everyone in Haringey considers not voting labour next time there is a local election. They need a shake-up.
Can you honestly see a Tory council listening to the concerns of residents over businesses?
No, but not difficult to imagine a Lib Dem one doing so.
