Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
A call to action for residents and users of Woodlands Park Road
Walking back today from dropping the boy off at his new school, it was pointed out to me by someone who lives on Woodlands Park Road that the padlock that secures the emergency access only gate across the road has been broken. Larger trucks (including a car transporter!) are now opening the gate to rat run their way down to West Green Road. Some close the gate, some don't.
This is a quiet back road with a busy Children's Centre, a Primary School and is a quiet route for countless school children to walk to and from school. However, the less civic-minded of the truck driving community are now passing the information on that you can get through and the number of lorries using it is increasing. Responses to requests not to come down the road and open the gate by neighbouring residents are met with the inevitable "F*** Offs" so beloved of road users in London.
I have reported it via the Haringey Council App and have tweeted a photo to the council. Can I ask that others who live or use the road regularly do the same so that this problem is quickly sorted and the rat-running is quickly nipped in the bud.

I agree Pauline. Just standing there for 10 mins chatting I saw some shocking driving. Maybe the new councillors could be persuaded to back even more measures to discourage and calm traffic. Haringey seems so behind the times when it comes to traffic management compared to neighbouring boroughs like Hackney.

What's with the supercar racing I've noticed on Green Lanes? The Yellow Lamborghini is really fast. Mostly it's Mercs and Audis though. Lots of very dangerous undertaking of one another when there's a gap in the parking etc. It's wild west on the roads out there.

The problem is that the 'birds of feather' they're actually displaying to, probably don't react like me or you.
I'd have thought that from them they're as likely as not to get the reaction they're after.

I think of it more as display than aggression. The fact that it's male display means that it echoes the ability to be 'strong' and 'daring', but I don't think it's aggressive in itself.

Well done to all who got this sorted out. I've lived in WPR since 1989, and the width restriction/barrier had relatively recently been installed after a big campaign by residents, who were tired of heavy traffic and the road being used as a "rat run". When I moved in, there were still a lot of cars using the road as a "rat run", but I have noticed over recent years the number of vehicles using the road (we live at the St Ann's Road end, between the end of WPR and barrier) has gone right down, and this section of the road actually seems quite quiet to me. We would notice noise from traffic etc, as both our living room and our main bedroom are at the front of the house. People contributing to the thread are absolutely right that it was a simple matter to fix/replace the padlock, and that there is some truly terrible driving around the area, but I haven't noticed it being especially bad in Woodland Park Road. As someone else notes, the worst of the too-fast driving is on Green Lanes. Frankly, until Green Lanes between Turnpike Lane and Manor House has a ban on parking, and far more "traffic calming" measures, it is always going to be very bad. I realise banning parking would affect the businesses there, but it is my impression that most people using them walk of use the bus.
