Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

You may have noticed a certain lack of progress with finishing the works on Green Lanes. Well, this time round we can't look to blame thee Council or TfL. Apparently, we're waiting for a shipment of granite to arrive from China and it's being repeatedly delayed.

This whole regeneration process has been absolutely pisspoor, the place has looked like a post-apolcalyptic wasteland and the area you show by St Anne's road is downright dangerous. I was excited about the regeneration but dismayed by how it's been run. And I agree, the cycle racks are weird and awful looking. But I'm pleased we have some!

A: Hi, I have a contract for 40 Sheffield Stands for the Green Lanes Regeneration Project. Can you Supply? How much are they?

B: Yes we can supply. They're £40 each.

A: £1600!? Ummm, let me get a few more quotes.

A: Hey Barry, it's me George. I've got a contract for 40 metal hoops suitable for cycle stands. How much?

C: You want them cheap or nice?

A: Cheap as you can do.

C: OK, I can do some crap ones for £8 each.

A: Marvelous, I'll take 40.

Update, apparently each bicycle stand on Green Lanes (and there are about 100 of them) cost £235. I guess they had to make sure they used up the cycling budget for the project and couldn't spend it on anything else, like a cycle lane...

Beggars belief. The whole paving slabs 'regeneration' beggars belief. That money could have been spent in so many more worthwhile ways. 

Where did the £235 come from? If that's true then someone has made £25k or so out of these which has worked out very well for them.

I've used them a couple of times. I'm not sure but that could have been when I got a scratch on my frame.

Every other bike stand I've used is either a one-piece polished metal or a one-piece plastic coated design - either way, bike frames don't get scratched by them. These are galvanised with a rough surface and with some  protruding welds, both likely to scratch paintwork even before the bike gets knocked by a passer-by and shifts.

I'd also worry, several years down the line when some welds begin to corrode, about the effect of a large lump hammer in an upward direction on the integrity of said welds.

I doubt I'm 'telling the thieves' - if they worked out years ago that pipe-freezing spray can make fancy bike locks cold enough that the steel becomes brittle and breakable, they'll be able to suss the future vulnerability of these things no problem, I fear.

I was thinking the same thing the other day Osbawn. It was an overcast day and I found it difficult to spot the row of four stands opposite The Salisbury. Why they couldn't have installed the tubular ones coated in black is beyond me.

I agree with and endorse with absolutely everything you say except that you have not mentioned the continued lack of any crossing AT ALL between the row of shops opposite the Salisbury and the pub. We still have to look both ways and dash across (with small kids) when there is a brief gap in the traffic. This is outrageous and so I am going to start a petition to get the council to do something about it. (Although I doubt it will work!)

Is there not going to be any crossing there then? Crossing the bottom of Harringay Road you basically have to step outand hope nothing decides to turn left up Harringay Road. Add to that the temporary ramps on to the pavement which have sunk down - at six months pregnant I often can't get the buggy back up onto the pavement and am stuck in the road with two children right on the bend. It seems ridiculous that so much has been spent elsewhere but this dangerous corner can't be sorted out.

Have you complained Harringaybirder? Does anyone know which bit of the ccouncil to complain to?
