Want a Tree on Your Street?
I was at an LCSP meeting last night and Ian Sygrave (the LCSP Chair) mentioned that there was some cash left in a post of money from the ward budgets that the LCSP had received. The money was for 'greening and trees' and some was used to clean up the pocket park at the bottom of Allison Road. Ian suggested we nominate 3 locations for new trees on Ladder Roads. So, if you would like one on your street and there is an empty tree pit (that has been empty for more than a year- so the roots of any previous tree may have rotted down) then let me know and I can put the location forward.
The council have an active programme of removing old/diseased trees and apparently should replace any they take away, but I am sure this does not always happen.
So, again, let me know if you have a suitable location to nominate. If there are good proposals for more than 3 trees we can see if we can find cash for other sites too.

Warham Road has fewer trees than its neighbours and more need due to traffic, and there are several spaces where once there were trees, so I nominate Warham.

An addendum to Justin's note.
Any tree pit that is empty because a tree has been removed by the Council should have the tree replaced a part of an ongoing rolling programme. The opportunity for these trees is for new plantings in paves where there is no vacant tree pit. I'd suggest that specific location are nominated like 'outside 25 XXXX Road'.

Thanks Hugh, I think I did mention that there should be a programme of replacement, but I think we have seen recently (I forget where the post is- can anyone point me to it?) that the council have not been attentive to this replacement and it is lagging a bit. Matt B has just contact me about a spot on Falkland Rd outside the school that has had trees removed some time back (he says several years) and no replacement has bene offered. In fact he suggested one has been tarmacked over- here is his street view image, and you an see the new patch of tarmac.
There is a good reason for some of the lag though as the organic root matter below ground that cannot be dug out has to degrade a little to allow the new tree to grow, but I believe (?) that the council look to leave a year or so, not several years.
A specific location for the tree would be very welcome though!

As always, I guess, the best of intentions gang oft agley.
Here's what the Council tree officer wrote to me a few months back:
It is the council’s normal practice to leave a tree pit vacant for 12-18 months after the removal of a tree to allow the tree matter in the soil to decay.
Subject to funding we aim to prioritise 4 different wards each year for replacement and new tree planting. The Harringay ward is next scheduled to be targeted in the 2017/18 planting season.
There is a commitment within the Council Plan to plant at least 150 new trees a year and we would seek to plant some new trees in Harringay Ward as part of this commitment. In the meantime should there be an interest from resident groups, there is tree sponsorship which a form can be downloaded from the councils web page.
If Matt's pit has been empty for years, it sounds like something's gone wrong - or it may have fallen victim to affordability.
I wonder if what we ought to do within the scope of what we discussed last night is to gather together a note of all the empty tree pits as well as taking nominations for the siting of trees. We can then help shape what happens in 2017/18.

Yes, I was thinking that too. I did say to Matt we should first find out if the council already have a plan for a particular spot, and aim to plant our additional trees in spots that are not targeted. I saw a spreadsheet ages back with their plan in, but cannot find the post. Do you think you can send me the details of the person you have been talking to so I can make contact and find out.
It also occurred to me we should make sure they use covering material that is porous- like the new plantings at the GL junctions. These are wider than the small earth spots they often leave open for trees, but are still usable as pavement- the great thing is they reduce the risk of trees becoming water stressed in the summer.

That position on Falkland Road was intended to have a tree planted during the last planting season, but once dug, the council said they ran into cabling. Surprising as it did have a tree back in 2008 as can be seen here and removed by 2012. That side of the street alone has lost three trees in recent years so I would second Matt's nomination.

I'd like 'my' tree replaced. It came down last year after a sustained attack by a local van driver who would bump it on every occasion he could. It was so sad to see it go. It was the last surviving tree in the road and in the spring we'd the have the birds hopping through looking for grubs and this time of year they'd be at the berries. I so miss it and the wildlife within it that I could watch from my armchair each day.

I didn't give a specific location on Warham as the choice is so wide e.g a section 1/3 of the street on the North side is devoid of trees with only an odd tree on the South side. We had a few planted recently near Green Lanes and they are doing well but there is still plenty of scope for many more.

You might want to consider the species. It can be surprisingly complex to specify but a lovely thing.
Your choice might well outlive you.
If I were you I'd consider the choice in the context of what other trees are nearby, and what the Ladder needs.
The Tree Officers have lots of experience in getting this right, so you could be guided by them.
We're all unique and many of the best of us are immigrants - I'd choose a tree that maintained the variety.

Beresford has just had two trees removed so hoping that they are going to be replaced. If not, here would be good for a couple.
