Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Is this the phone box Darth Vader designed? Another terrible eyesore on Green Lanes. It seems to take up half the pavement, and, judging by appearances today, is already being used as a pissoir.

Well , with the lack of pubic conveniences maybe BT are providing a pubic service??
Would be nice if it flushed though.
The new iPhone?
Free wifi, phone charging access points and touch screen map.
We've got one too, outside downhills on west green road. Why paint them black? They could be brightly coloured, nice design additions to the area (like the old red phone boxes) instead they look like univiting coffins.

I see a red door and I want to paint it black

No colours any more I want them to turn black

It was heralded by a box, attractively painted with trees, announcing an exciting community amenity. And we end up with a hideous oversized eyesore which takes up half the pavement.

Yes, I got all excited when I saw that thinking we were getting a new tree on Green Lanes but then this monstrosity appeared. As if trying to negotiate over crowded and litter strewn pavements round here not bad enough already. as pointed out, it's already being used for various other things. ah, the modern world we live in!

I thought it was quite smart actually, and if it does all of those things it's more useful than the vandalised and antiquated thing that I remember being there before. If it was in Old Street you wouldn't bat an eyelid. Why can't our area have something modern for a change?

Eyesore? Yeah, because Wood Green is an area of outstanding natural beauty... ok if it was brightly coloured that would look alright for about 5 minutes, maybe, but if it was bright red it would look A LOT worse.

Piss is a different matter. There are much bigger issues causing this than a BT box and you know it.

Bottom line it's an attempt to make the high street modern and useful for visitors. The area's shops, despite their weaknesses, (e.g. The woeful replacements for M&S and BHS), pull in people from lots of other parts of North London, and hey, with airbnb etc, we're probably getting more tourists now too!

Sorry, but I need to stick up for Darth

The raison d'etre for the box with its (over)wide dimensions is not the front with the telecoms and touchscreen info point (fitted since the picture at top was taken). It's the back which has a full-width programmable LED adverts screen. It's the logical follow-on from the old boxes being used as static advertising sites with minimal telecoms revenue - this will be more profitable to the owners, New World Payphones, since the adverts won't be static and can be updated remotely.

As for design, the shape of the top is a close match for the classic GPO phone boxes, so that's a recognition factor, but BT may well have a trademark-style restriction on any other operator using 'Post Office Red'.

Will the screen be the replacement for the "traditional cards in the phone box"adverts?

More likely to be used for political advertising for people we've never heard of.

Its a special helpline should you suddenly find yourself surrounded by satellite dishes and spitters.
