Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Traffic: I Know It's The Holidays, But...
I usually cycle, hating the tube, and being a sicky boy on busses. Sometimes though I am forced to endure as many of you do daily (hats off to you).
I, like most, have been reluctant to take the bus because I like the walk up to Manor House, but also I feel at peak times the bus can sometimes be no quicker than walking.
I walked up to Manor House this morning and I was amazed to see how clear Green Lanes was. this was 9am, I expected it to be chocka. I know it is the holidays and I have felt a few times that Green Lanes seems to be moving pretty fluidly (at levels around or better than pre the Wightman closure). I was unsure if this was my fallible memory, or if this is part of a trend or what, but The pics below amazed me.
Is this indicative of the impact of school run traffic primarily? I know there will be less folks on the road as normal because of the holidays, but how much of this is down to the school run?

I noticed last week on a couple of days that on my usual walk up from Manor House, there was no traffic on the stretch up to the Arena at all. There were cars, but they were moving at a speed you might expect at 2am, not 5.15. There were only a few cars in the queue on Endymion, and there was congestion around the Arena, but the air was almost breathable.

I think this is what sparked my interest too. I have seen a few evenings now when things seemed to be moving well. Not what I was expecting. I am not sure what this is telling us.

I walked down to Sainsburys after I voted at 8:45 and GL was eerily quiet. When I emerged at an hour later it was back to normal.

As I've said many times, a small reduction in traffic can lead to a large reduction in congestion. I think the point you're making though is that much of the "local" traffic was from far enough away that now with the closure of Wightman Rd it is not coming anywhere near here or it's disappeared completely.

I am actually trying to be careful what I say John because I am not entirely sure, but yes, that is in my mind.

I don't think it's to do with the school run per se but also because many parents take time off work to look after their children and/or go on holiday. It also means that (most) school staff are not going into work, less deliveries etc.
I think John's point is also a fair one.
There are probably a combination of reasons.

I'd go along with that - that parents aren't at work I mean. I don't think many children at my son's school are delivered by car. They ought not to be given that in my son's year the catchment area went down to 0.19 miles

Traffic is always lighter in school holidays, right across London. Not just at school run time but all day as a proportion of people are away. After months of Beijing-style congestion and pollution on GL this is a welcome return to rather more 'normal' conditions -i.e patterns of roads being clear then congested. I wouldn't expect it to last beyond early September, although Wightman will probably be back in service by then.
