Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have an aunt who (long story short) has some 'brown wood furniture'. This may end up going to  house clearance guy for a pittance.

Anyone got any ideas if this and things like it may be worth anything, or who to go to for advice before we let it go?

FGS don't go the house clearance route !!

Even I would give a lot for the desk and the dining table is beautiful.

The oval mirror is not to my taste but it looks French Napoleonic style.

Suggest you get a proper antiques dealer in for an appraisal.

And get coasters under the mugs asap :-)

Nah it's junk. Give me £20 and I'll dump it down the passage for you.
I would take the lot to Criterion Auction rooms in Essex Road. They will give you a fair appraisal of what the items are really worth. You can set reserves if you don't want certain items go for silly money. Obviously they take their cut on the hammer price.

Just googled "Georgian Overmantel" and a picture of this identical one came up straight away. "A Georgian overmantle mirror with three part flanked pilasters, Corinthian columns, the composite relief depicting Hercules being drawn in his chariot by six lions (overpainted)

£600 - £800" (2007 prices & I don't think much of their spelling)
If not overpainted & with original gilding it may be worth considerably more.

Thats spooky, it is exactly the same.

Justin I would first get on line and find some well known auction houses and send them the photos, they will let you know if they are something that they will deal with and will advise further.

I'm afraid it's pretty clear yours has been over - painted. The pale blue background of the one posted on Batemans (which is original) has been painted over with black on yours. Blame the Victorians. And yours looks to have some damage...The feet are missing as is one of the roundels at the top but the hole has been filled and over-painted. It's definitely the same mirror but the only real way to know it's true value is to have it properly appraised.
There's an online company t called Value My Stuff https://www.valuemystuff.com who will give you an idea using photos (they need to be high quality) for £15 per item. You can then decide what might be worth going down the more formal auction house route.
Criterion Auction rooms will do the same for free! Just email the pics to valuations@criterionauctioneers.com
An even better option!

It's hard when you need to dispose of well-loved furniture because no-one has house-room/not to modern taste, and the display cabinet is lovely! Agree with others above.

Thanks for all this guys, I did wonder what (if any) response I would get, but I am genuinely amazed- especially at the "Georgian Overmantel" spot! I did not even know what it is.

Antoinette, I think you are right, it has been overpainted, and there is some cracking in it, but it is still a great piece.

Lets see what the valuers say.

Thanks again.
