Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Don't Forget - Wightman Road Closed for 5 months from Next Tuesday (29th March)
In case it's escaped your notice or slipped your mind, Wightman Road will be closed to through traffic for five months starting next Tuesday 29th March.
This will be a significant dislocation to North London traffic movement. So much so that warning notices have been placed as far away as Archway. No doubt it will also have a significant impact on Harringay's traffic.
However, there really is no alternative to at least partial road closure. The railway bridge between Alroy and Wightman roads is being replaced and there will simply be no road for a few months!
One option the Council could have taken would have been to simply reroute the traffic via the Ladder rung roads. It is to their credit, however, they recognised that with over 16,000 vehicles a day using Wightman Road, this would have placed an intolerable burden on our narrow residential roads, already beset by undue traffic volumes.
After consultation with residents, the solution decided upon is to place blocks at regular intervals along Wightman Road, in effect creating clusters of two or three rung roads. Whilst this will retain unfettered access for residents. it will render the whole Ladder, including Wightman, useless as a rat run. Quite what it will mean for traffic in Harringay, Haringey and further afield remains to be seen. Those of us who have been working with the Council on this very much hope that traffic will quickly find other routes. It's fair to say, however, that at very best, we're going to experience some very heavy congestion on Green Lanes for a month or so.
At the same time, the Harringay traffic study will continue. The coincident timing of this piece of work with the bridge closure may be fortunate in that it will give the consultants an opportunity to study the outcome of diverting traffic away from Harringay.

I agree. I live close to Green Lanes/Fairfax and traffic has been flowing freely. I think we should campaign for this to be permanent. It works for Gardens and Harringay/Hermitage roads which were also popular rat runs for commuters from Enfield Barnet and Herts.

A major pinch point seems to be from east Hornsey High Street, under the railway bridge to Turnpike Lane/ Wightman junction which was still solid at 20:15 last night, however Green Lanes and the ladder was completely free at this time.

However I did that journey in the opposite direction from the ladder to Tottenham lane at 8.20pm yesterday eve and it took 20 mins. Returning home at 10.40pm took about the same time and the traffic lights at turnpike lane/green lanes don't seem to have been rephrased yet ie max of 5 cars at a time.

Yes it's odd that they haven't rephased the traffic lights. It should be allowing a lot more traffic to cross Green Lanes (which has no hold ups) through Turnpike Lane from Westbury ave and ditto from Crouch End.

I was told by Haringey again today that's due to the junction of Turnpike Lane with Green Lanes. By way of an update, I was also told that TfL have already lengthened the right turn cycle of those traffic lights and are adjusting bus movements to ease the flow, but there's a limit to how much can be done.

Just logging that a lot of traffic is still going up Warham road so it must also be turning down pemberton. Are there signs alerting that access only and wightman closed BEFORE you get to the Salisbury Road/Green Lanes junction and on st Anne's road itself?

I haven't seen any signs on St Anns/Salisbury Road to give advance warning as once on the one way loop its too late, and really there needs to be a big sign at the lights at the Salisbury Road/ Green lanes junction and the entrance to Warham Road to show that Warham Road is access only and a waste of time going that way; there seems to be an increase of traffic going up Warham Road which then has to go down Pemberton. (I have e mailed Cllr McNamara)

I think there is one at the entance of Warham - large, bright yellow and erected behind the tree !!

I think that one just says 'access to numbers x-xx Wightman Road', nothing about road closures and access only.
