We had a meeting of the Friends of the Harringay Passage yesterday and we touched on the issue of dog poo (it came top as the top issue in the Ladder wide survey the FoHP recently carried out).
I saw a post a few weeks ago here on HoL about the fact that by April next year, micro-chipping of dogs will be mandatory.
It made me think that it would be good to also include DNA profiling of all dogs now that this technology is so easily accessible, and for this to be stored centrally and on a the micro-chip. Basically, we have an issue with dog poo, dog poo can be DNA tested to the animal producing it (and the feckless owner leaving it), indeed councils are trialing this now. If we could make fines representative of the actual cost of enforcement rather than a cost to the council then there would also be an incentive to councils to do more to rid our streets of this mess that we and our children have to wade through on a daily basis.
Thoughts?

I hope the do the same for spitting, you can't walk the pavements without having to avoid the hawked-up contents of someones throat, absolutely disgusting.
Back to the future. I can remember the 'no spitting' signs in the buses of the 1940s. They were phased out but maybe should be revived.
If you give a home to a rescue cat or dog, the pet will be microchipped and neutered for you. Here are some lovely dogs needing homes http://alldogsmatter.co.uk/ and more cats and dogs here
I always say to people with pets that if you don't get them microchipped, you're putting them at risk of being put down if they get lost and no owner found.
The reality is that rescue places can't cope as there are so many animals needing homes. They're under so much pressure and we can help them by giving homes to rescue pets and making sure our pets are microchipped and neutered (and by keeping contact details up to date with the microchip company).
Disproportionate, but definitely satisfying. In fact, when the owners are identified, we should all be allowed to go round and do a poo in their living room.
But every time the law is broken it is a behavioural issue.
I have to agree with Judith, it's likely that the owners who leave dog mess probably wouldn't bother chipping their animals.
So the DNA profiling will just end up being an extra cost on our council tax. I'll be interested to hear how the trial goes.
It's horrible though, the number of times I have accidentally pushed my pram through dog poo. Disgusting, and a major health risk, especially for babies and small children.
Would CCTV would be a better deterrent? Maybe they could trial dummy cameras?
