It is sad, but a fact, that at this time of year many of us will become very aware of homeless people living in our wards - particularly wards with shopping centres.
Residents might be interested in a new reporting service that was launched today. As the website says.
The programme encourages members of the public to phone or use the online form to inform Streetlink when they see a homeless person on the street. Streetlink then passes the information to the relevant local council, which will then notify local homelessness services. StreetLink will also follow up the council within ten days to find out what happened, and pass this information on to the member of the public who notified them, if they ask to be kept informed.
The telephone number for reporting is 0300 9000 0914.
The website is www.streetlink.org.uk

Gordon do you accept (a) that helping homeless people to any significant extent would take resources and (b) that the local authority should have any responsibility in the matter?
1000 or so. Number of times you've posted something simply to have the last word. I'm out.
You're entirely right, Michael. I have delete my post.
I have already reported this through the Street Link service. It may be that other people have also reported in an effort to help this person. I will update if I get any more details.
Glad to hear the local councillors and residents are on the case, Karen.
Quite right, Michael.
I was hoping the no doubt always alert St Ann's councillors would like to post something here. My subjective impression is that there seems to be a significant visible increase in rough sleeping. It would be good to have an update on the borough's systems in place to help people respond appropriately by email or phonecall if they have specific concerns .
Though I realise that not every homeless person welcomes 'official' intervention.
Good on you Karen; and thank you Alan for resurrecting Karen's original thread.
We went past on Saturday morning and there seemed to be a couple of people there, one woman offering coffee but I wasn't sure who was the homeless person or if there were more than one. The bedding and bags set out like it was pretty permanent which made me really sad.
From what I've heard from local police, the problem is that these days (following cuts) there isn't really anywhere left to refer single homeless men to. There are therefore increasing numbers sleeping out all over the place.
Who knows what will happen after George Osborne's next round of 25-40% cuts, to be announced in the Autumn's comprehensive spending review.
