Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Anyone know what's going on on Green Lanes? Sounds like a protest on some kind.

Sorry, my attempts at humour don't always land the right way.

It's a peace demo in memory of those that died in the Suruc bombing this weekend.

It's the Kurds protesting about ISIS and the way it's all being handled by Turkish authorities I think?

Isis have been using chemical weapons against the Kurds. Saddam Hussein did the same against the Kurds..

oh dear, those nasty demonstrators! They'll wanting womens rights and the vote next!

Why?

Green Lanes is the heart of the Turkish community in London – it seems a very logical place to protest if you're trying to gain popular support.

To be clear, as I understand it most of the businesses on Green Lanes in Harringay are owned by Kurdish Turks.

There are many Turks who are against the repressive Erdogan government, hence the massive riots in Istanbul two years ago; and the Turkish government will be aware of the demo!

In the recent Turkish election the pro-Kurdish 'Peoples Democratic Party' gained 10% of the vote to gain seats in the parliament for the first time; their support was not only from Kurds but from liberal Turks on a platform of environmentalism, minority rights, LGBT rights, egalitarianism, so I don't think there is any need to worry about what the local Turkish population think of the demo. (I saw lots of posters in English and was also handed a leaflet to explain the background to the demonstration-in English).

Yeah I learned that one from Matt Baylis' latest book!

I caught part of it as I was going to Sainsbury's. From what I could see all of the signs and chanting were in Turkish apart from maybe this one sign so non-Turkish observers didn't know what it was about. If they are seeking popular support maybe wise to have more signs and chanting in English? It was quite moving to see so many people come together in peaceful demonstration, and it seemed very well organised just a shame that the message was lost on the majority of bystanders.

They were chanting in English.
