As a climate professional I am always interested in grass roots stuff like this.
Sadly, I emailed the councillor responsible for environment (John Bevan) recently, saying that if the council really wanted to get serious about climate then get all the blinking dumped fridges off the street quick start and the incredibly potent greenhouse gas HCFC refrigerants out of them and treated appropriately, rather than the 'scrap' guys taking them and doing who knows what to the refrigerants. Never heard back from him sadly to hear if he thought it a good idea or not.
Each fridge is different, but a typical refrigerator holds refrigerants with global warming potentials equivalent to a tonne of CO2. The same result from energy efficiency requires a lot more effort I can tell you. Not that energy efficiency is necessarily a bad thing given its additional non climate related benefits.
Any thoughts about an angle for FoHP on this Justin?
Wow, almost as strict as the criteria the Labour Party have for voting in a selection meeting.
We are constituted, we are sorting the bank account and eventually will be around for 12 months.
It's not clear how long this fund will go for but assuming it could be an annual source of funding, I think it's good to plan ahead. I doubt whether we could have come up with a project within the time limit even if we weren't excluded, but it's certainly an area we could explore further as part of our longer term planning.
So Justin, if we think putting carbon emission reduction on our list of long term projects is a good idea, is there an angle that FoHP could work on?
Let me come back to you later on this, I have a thought or two...
John Bevan had to take it on because Nilgun was given the push. To be fair to Nilgun, she has been pretty active in this area during her term in office (even if we haven't always agreed on ways and means to achieve it ).
Right about having more luck with Joe G, and, even before election fever took hold, he has been involved with all this 'ere green stuff from the beginning. The people who run the 40:20 initiative are a good bunch. I would EVENTUALLY like to work with them.
The Concept is a good one and shows that LB Haringey is encouraging its residents and businesses to contribute in tackling the problem of Carbon emission.
Problem is that since the deadline not much has happened to date in regards to the feedback for the applications already submitted. Also the feedback given to applicants in previous applications need some work to ensure that people and businesses do not get discouraged in contribution to solving or tackling environmental issues. Also a guarantee that the ideas we present will not be taken by local authority to there advantage and forget the mind that initiated the project but reward them and involve them and other like minds.
We have great minds and ideas in Haringey as a whole and the Local authority needs to show they appreciate by listening and helping to implement and even deliver. This way people are empowered and they have a sense of ownership especially in the Super Output Areas or deprived Communities.
The Waste management is growing rapidly and this would be a way to tackle Youth unemployment to break the unemployment cycle.
All in all, good work Liz and Haringay Community Online for keeping us informed.
