Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Councillor Nilgun Canver found guilty of attempting to pervert the course of justice

A jury at Wood Green Crown Court today found Councillor Nilgun Canver guilty by a majority of ten to two after more than a day of deliberation.

Nilgun Canver was accused of lying to police after her son crashed the family’s car in Tottenham in January, 2013.

According to the Haringey Indy, before passing sentence, Judge Fraser Morrison said: “This was a short period of lunacy on your part and your good sense of judgement had parted from you.

“Perhaps you thought you were protecting your son but your attempts to pull the wool over the police officer’s eyes was short-lived and were doomed to fail, as you see now.”

Cllr Canver was sentenced to a conditional discharge of one year and was ordered to pay costs of £500 and a £15 victim surcharge. She was told by the judge, 'I don't suppose a court will ever be seeing you again.'

Aren't Nilgun's finances her own private business?

Agreed. Private info redacted - elected member salary info left as this is already a mater of public record.

It was in the blimmin Newspaper! Read out in open court! How on earth do you think I found out about it? You put it right back up please. Ridiculous bloody fiddling.

Fine to correct me on my grammar, but despite this being published (how many of us really read the Journal anyway?), it's still her private business which doesn't need to continue to be published.

No! She used it as part of her defence in court and I think it's actually very pertinent. You think those lawyers come completely free? I corrected you on your grammar because I'm very annoyed at Hugh for censoring this. I'm sorry.

I agree with Nicholas. If Nilgun says she wants it put back, let me know.

I would normally expect you to not be so proactive with censoring publicly available information. You were wrong and it sets a bad precedent.

The fact that you can run up tens of thousands of pounds in debts defending yourself from the government that you have been serving on behalf of the Labour Party for 15 years is WRONG.

John, save your energy for the important battles. If Nilgun wants her private finances republished on HoL, I'll happily do so.

Stop hyperventilating John, it does not set a precedent. Of course anyone defending themselves in court is going to throw whatever they've got in their defence but to continue splashing her private business around on a website which Nilgun will probably read is wrong. If I were her I'd be pissed off despite your good efforts of defending her.

Burak Canver, 22, was convicted in August 2012 of taking the family’s BMW 520d without consent, failing to stop after an accident and driving without insurance.

Cllr Canver has been my Cllr for 15 + years. She is amazingly hard working, dedicated her life to politics and achieved many great things. She ensured Haringey was a lap dancing free zone, worked hard to get an article 4 in place for slum landlords, brought playstreets in to the borough, fought hard to get a domestic violence project as part of the councils front line services and on a professional level was extremely supportive when I had to deal with issues on the Campsbourne estate.

This judgement will never change the levels of respect I have for her nor take away her contribution on making Haringey a better place.

As a person she is strong, astute, loyal and very caring. I am proud to call her my friend. I was gutted to hear the verdict today. But her son is still alive and she has her freedom. She is extremely loved and respected by many and has some very loving and loyal friends who will always be keeping her strong.

This won't be the last we see or hear of Nilgun, she is committed to the St Ann's/Harringay area and her passion will see her return in one guise or another.

Fantastic writeup from Stephen Moore in the Journal here. Essential lunchtime reading.
