Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
An Ale Shop on Green Lanes................
I saw some work going on in the ex-immigration consultants premises bang opposite St Ann's Road. So, I popped in and asked what sort of shop they were creating. "An ale shop", I was told. Wow, I thought....great. Then he added, "You know for the ladies.....for the nails....a nail shop". Ah well, nearly.
Then two doors down in the old Haringey Flooring "Closed for Reburbishment"), I noticed an alcohol licensing application pinned in the window. So, in addition to Bun & Bar in the former Obergine premises, it looks like we're to have another bar on that strip - but sorry, no ale shop.

There was a notice on a shop being refurbished "Looking for nail technicians", I said to the guy by the door "in my day they were called carpenters". He put me straight. Anyone for four candles?

Maggie, you've beaten me to it! I agree it's time we had a Harringay Women's Guild of Carpenters, Chippies, Floorers, Roofers, Blacksmiths, Farriers & Allied Nailers. The growing preference for screws over nails in some of these trades, however, probably suggests the need for an alternatively named Guild. At the Sign of the Four Candles indeed.

Deniz #2 near Mattison Rd sells a surprisingly good selection of ales and they are really nice in there too.
The ales are on the middle display I think near the till. I know they have Waggledance and Badger at least, but don't know if you are keen on more obscure ones, I can't remember any of the other names I saw, but it was a whole row or two of different ones.

Yes, and to be fair The Lion King have a few at the back as well and once said to me that they'd get in whatever I wanted.
Just for a fleeting minute though I had visions of a shop like Borough Wines in Stoke Newington that has lots and lots of bottles of beer from local breweries. Pricey though, I admit. and probably not enough (metaphorical) beardy ale drinkers (of which I count myself one) in Harringay to risk a venture like that here.

You lured me onto this thread with that misleading title! But what a shame there isn't an ale shop.
For that matter, what a shame that the pubs don't have a wider selection of interesting ales. The ladder has a couple of interesting and rotating ales on and so does the Salisbury, but I'm talking independent pub/bar with a wide range of ales from the ever expanding brewing scene in London and beyond.
Jam in the Jar, which is great fun, has really missed a trick by not cottoning on to this huge and exiting trend. It's exactly the sort of place that should have great ales, even if it could only stock them in bottle to begin with. Instead there's just a shocking and tiny selection of lager. No good. End of ale rant.

Meantime "London" is on tap at the Garden Ladder Jonny, The Salisbury have "Frontier" which is also excellent. Have a bit of removing to do from the venue later - so a timely reminder to self.

I read a comment on Beer in the Evening, made just before Christmas, that the "new boss" at the Old Ale Emporium used to be in charge at the now-closed Oakdale Arms on Hermitage Road. The poster, a real ale enthusiast, seemed to think the OAE would shortly be improving from the ale point of view.
