Here's a couple of good words to impress your friends:dioecious and monoecious . Most plants are monoecious or hermaphrodite ie they have both female and male parts. Some, like the courgettes being tarted around here, have separate plants, some male some female, they are dioecious. Holly is another common one, you only get berries if you have a female plant that's within pollen-catching distance of a male.
