I really hadn't intended to go for lunch. I was just on a quick errand. There and back in half an hour. Then I spotted something I simply couldn't walk past. Shamata was offering Mexican tacos for their special today.
I'd had the heads up that the chef there had worked in San Francisco, so five minutes later I was settled comfortably with a large cappuccino in front of me, testing out the free wi-fi and awaiting my taco.
I was not disappointed. Freshly cooked ground beef, home-made guacamole. I took a bite and thought of California.
The taco came with a side order of tomato rice but the two tacos alone were more than enough to fill me up.
This is a lovely relaxed cafe. I chatted with the chef's sister, who is very proud of her sister's food as she should be, who explained that everything is made fresh, all the cakes are made by her sister from fresh, organic ingredients and that she is keen to try new things to tempt people's palate. Alongside the more 'traditional' Turkish offerings I spotted breakfast burritos, home-made granola, huge plates of pasta and wonderful looking cakes and dessert all made in-house. This is a slice of Californian cafe life (on which I'm something of an expert ) right on the Lanes.
Seriously, this place is a little gem. As I finished my Turkish tea gazing out at the world going by, I was already planning my next trip with the family in tow. When my husband spots that rice pudding there'll be no stopping him.
