Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

No council tax paid on Wards corner by Grainger and TFL since 2008. Can this be true?

Wards Corner, N15 empty buildings.

I have been told by my neighbour that Haringey Council have failed to collect any council tax on any of the empty building on the Wards Corner site when they could have claimed thousands of pounds in back revenue for the people of Haringey, how can this be true?

The law was changed back in 2008 allowing councils to claim tax on empty property, thus provide an income and to encourage occupancy of the buildings. This would be over 5 years of lost tax revenue to Haringey.

This would mean that Grainger a company with over 2 billion Pounds of assets appears not to have paid tax on the 2 two empty shop units by Seven Sisters Underground station and hasn't paid on all those empty homes in Suffield Road, n15. They surely must owe the rate payers of Haringey thousand of pounds at the time when we have to tolerate sacking teachers, closing day centres for older persons or youth clubs.

Plus TFL with approximately 10,000 sqm of space at the corner of the High Road and Seven Sisters Road i.e. prime retail space should owe money.

It sounds absolutely appalling that a local Tottenham priest is fined for non payment of his Council tax withheld in protect against the cuts but a multi billion pound companies and TFL get off scot free and maybe their payment would have avoided some cuts.

How can the Council claim they need money when they allow such terrible tax evasion, can anyone tell me more details of these Wards Corner empty buildings and the tax situation?

The problem with gentrification is not the actual gentrification itself  but the idea of enforced gentrification. What I object to is moving people out of the area to make way for this new influx. There is nothing wrong with this happening organically.  I think we only have to put ourselves into this situation to realize how terrible it is for those who are evicted or priced out of the area. The whole point of Tottenham is the mix of people who live here. Gentrification has a big drawback in that it tends to make an area homogenous. I have some lovely neighbours who are having to move because they cannot afford the rent hikes that are going on.

Yes, Candy. I agree. But there's no inevitability about this process. Alternative choices can be made which don't mean the displacement of poorer people further out of city centres by powerful interests.

It's what concerns me about the Council letting Spurs roll-over them in North Tottenham. For what? A 365 day a year "Leisure Destination" and a Wembley-style walkway! If these are so great, why aren't Kober and Goldberg proposing it for their neighbourhood in Muswell Hill?

Needless to say I am still waiting for the secret Arup plans. Which, it slipped out at a recent consultation event - are not just about Love Lane Estate but elsewhere - unspecified - in Tottenham.

I wonder if any of us residents will get to hear the full ideas and details of what's being cooked-up for us. Or perhaps they'll first have to consult a body called the Tottenham Landowners and Major Businesses?

I see absolutely no reason to FoI the council on this as you claim to possess the evidence, yet have not supplied it. This leads me to think your claims are untrue.

As several people have mentioned, please post the evidence if you have it (since complying with FoI requests costs the council money, so it would be a further waste of public money for me to request it if you already have it).
