Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Could Haringey Council be persuaded to bring Hackney's pioneering play streets scheme to our roads?
Hackney Council have developed a groundbreaking scheme that will close selected streets to through traffic using Temporary Play Street Orders (TPSOs), which allow parents to apply to the council to close their street for a few hours per week or month. Those who live in play streets can still drive to and from their homes, and will be guided at walking pace by volunteer stewards stationed at each end of the street.
This seems like a wonderful idea to me and one that I'd like to see given a try in Haringey. I'd love to be able to close the streets around our local schools for a few hours on Friday afternoons to let kids hang out and play with their friends for example. We could work out a rota so one Ladder street gets closed every Sunday.
Maybe you have other ideas? Could we reclaim the streets for our youngsters even if only for a few hours a week or month? Would Haringey Council be persuaded to give it a go? If Hackney can do it, so can we!

Like everyone else I think playing out is great for children and something we should make happen. I know Bristol has started this and I hope our officers will be speaking to colleagues there to find out the best and least bureaucratic way to go about making this happen. I know in Bristol a lot of it was down to parents in the street organising themselves to work on the street when it was closed. Sadly we don't have a Play Service in Haringey anymore so the officers involved are just from traffic and Highways not anyone with a Play background who could work with them and with local communities.
Nilgun and I are working on this together and we can report on progress. It requires the Council to do its bit - work out with local people which streets would be good to start, work with residents there - and for residents to plan how and when they want the project to work. Julie mentioned Clarendon Road N15 where people have already contacted us.
To nudge things along we could have a discussion and presentation at the Area Forum in November.

Its great to hear progress is being made Zena. I've been contacting the council about this too as you can see from this and the other HoL threads about playing out days and as you can see there is a lot of interest from others here to do this on the Ladder, so i hope we also could be considered along with Clarendon Road as a place to start.
Due to the timing I can't usually make the area forum meetings, would you also continue to chat here on HoL to help progress this? What sort of things would you like us to do to help work out which streets would be good to start? How about one of the streets on either side of North Harringay Primary, or Fairland Park?

Can you tell me which department you've been contacting?
I have a horrible feeling this might be the type of topic which gets passed around. Frankly, it needs someone who will take it forward at the officer end so the paperwork is in place.
We will be chasing it up and I'm very happy to keep all the communication going on this.
I think children's play is really important and it says a lot about the type of society we've become that we have to plan for children to play freely together. When I ran the Play Service one of my goals was to make sure the children had space to play, be together and make their own fun. I think overall we did quite well. But LBH playcentres are a thing of the past.
On a more practical note - do you have a group of people on the Ladder who would want to develop play streets? As I said before, this has to be a joint effort between parents and the Council to make it work and if there are people who want this to happen - let's give it a go.

I've been talking to the council road closures people.
Yes we have a group of people on the Ladder who want to help develop this - see all the people posting here on this thread and the other thread where this came up a few months ago. Do we need to do something to help demonstrate that this isn't just random chattering on the Internet but people who would really help work to make this happen here? -

Hi Ant, the meeting was my 1:1 with officers. We're investigating legal requirements and getting evaluation feedback from Bristol. Zena and I are meeting with Clarendon Rd. residents on 15 Oct. by then we'll have had all info needed.

Sounds like a great idea. We were invited to the Avondale St party this summer and it was fantastic seeing the children being free to run up and down the road - they had an amazing time. It made me realise how on edge I am walking round our streets with the children, especially when they're on their scooters.
