Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've just seen two heavily laden Jewsons lorries driving down Burgoyne Road at 750am.

I understood that these lorries weren't meant to come down the Ladder streets, due to the weight they carry, and the impact on the judder bars and houses (does anyone else's house shake when they go past?)

I recall a forum about this a while ago, but if anyone has any ideas about who to complain directly to in the Council, please let me know.

Thanks!

John McMullan announces council-throwing competition! Tossing the kober?

Ya wag!

Hi

We have the sam issue on Warham Road.

Whilst I agree that contacting the companies concerned may be successful I think that the Local Athority has  a responsibility, for several reasons. The ladder roads are here because the houses are here. This seems an obvius point, however I suspect that the land was bought privately in the 1800's by property developers, who then invited  Local Authority at the time to "adopt" the roads. There may well have been conditions concerning the purpose and use of the roads?

The Local Athority has put traffic calming measures in the roads and it is likely that they did not conduct any impact or risk assessment before doing so. It is the traffic going over the humps which causes or house to shake and to flex. Our House Flexes about its strongest point, ( between the two front rooms) This is similar to placing a plastic ruler across one's knee and pushing down on bothe ends. this has cause tiles to come loose and lintels to be damaged.

I beleive this to be the direct responsibility of the Local Athority in placing humos in the road. other traffic calming measures are available. getting the Local athorithy to accept responsibility is another matter,

I would be in favour of closing off one end of each road on the ladder?

Or putting those narrow steel road bollards (like outside Woodlands Park) to both physically restrict the size of vehicle that can get down the road, and slow them down considerably.

Difficulties? Well, we have Yashar Halim at the bottom of the road, and these guys take a lot of deliveries, the school opposite takes deliveries- these would both be affected, does it have implications for emergency vehicles (not that I have ever seen an ambulance or fire engine use our road as an access route- thought it does not mean they will not at some point).

As I mentinod in a previous thread I suspect the lack of enthusiasm to enforce these regulations is the fact it costs a kings ransom for the council to put out the enforcements teams, and they cannot recover the full enforcement cost from the people they nick. Until we get to a point where (1) the disincentive is so large by way of a prohibitive fine that can see proceeds directly put back into the council's enforement teams and (2) enforcements teams are actually resourced so as to enforce everything they have to enforce, things won't change other than bitty piece meal actions!

Does anyone know if the London Lorry Scheme applies? http://www.tfl.gov.uk/microsites/freight/london_lorry_control_schem...

Some of the Jewsons lorries look as if they would meet the weight criteria, and I have heard them going down the ladder as early as 5am.

Therese - do you have the document explaining that the houses were not affected by speed bumps? I think that's the document I have been told about and have been trying to get a copy of. Would be interesting to see if the surveyor is still around and what he'd make of the houses 20 years later!

No problem - this issue isn't going to go away quickly, so I can wait!

I raised this with SNT last July. Recently I have been getting frustrated again by Jewson's lorries.  Have had 3 in the last 2 hours on Cavendish Road.  I even recognise certain drivers as being worse than others.  I might take up the advice and contact the store manager. Here's the email and response from last July.
Hello
I've just had my house shaken by a Jewson's lorry travelling up Cavendish Road.  They quite frequently use this road to get to their depot on Wightman Road.  Given the 7.5 tonne restriction I would assume that they are not allowed to do this.
That being said, with restrictions in place all around Jewson's, how are they supposed to access their site?  The vehicle in question was RA57 HNG for your info.

Many thanks

Thank you for your email and sorry for the delay in responding I have been away.
Jewsons have an approved route to their store via Cavendish Rd or (for larger vehicles that might not make the turn at the top of Cavendish Rd) along Wightman Rd from Turnpike Lane as they need access to their store.
The 7.5ton limit has the caveat of "Except for access" and this is a legitimate access reason.
They are one of the more considerate firms and if you have any other concerns about their lorries might I suggest you speak to the store manager. They are very receptive to comments made and will pass information along to their drivers and those of other companies delivering.
I hope this helps

For some people power, I suggest that we all post on the Jewsons Facebook Page (I have just done so) and also on their trade forum. http://forum.jewson.co.uk/

I have found that firms often respond quickly when you get onto their social media!

Good idea!

Hope you get a dialogue going with them. Just posted a couple of tweets for you:

Thanks Hugh - it's not just Cavendish, but Burgoyne too, which has the same throughput, but in the other direction.  And I endorse what has been said about some drivers being better than others - there is one guy in particular who deserves a thumbs up as I always see him slowing down when going over bumps, and there is very little shaking as a result.  If only the rest of them would follow his lead...
