Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This week's planning applications list shows that the march of the double-shop 'Turkish' is continuing along Green Lanes. This time Gaziantep are spreading next door and into Wilson's Laundmatic.

That's for that Geoff, I wasnt sure about how rates were set and who did that. I always blame the council and clearly it's not them this time! (Sorry Council...)

The shops are pretty big round here, they go back a lot way which makes them good for restaurants but expensive for shops.

It makes more sense to me now economically what is happening though socially very sad because of losing local traders who offer those nice personal touches and face to face contact. But they probably cant afford those rents and also the upkeep of big places and to keep on staff which must be a big bill with NI and the like to pay out.

I checked with the Harringay Traders about Baldwin's. It appears that although they have no immediate plans to go, it's not beyond the realms that they would sell up given the right incentive to go. Apparently, businesses are fed up with being harassed by over zealous parking services who appear to have forgotten that they can allow business 20 mins loading time. Both C&G and Baldwin's are in constant dispute with parking over tickets and fines which is causing them headaches that they can do without.

So, to keep Andy in the area, we need to support our local butchers (which incidentally also supplies interesting deli stuff, free range eggs, pickles and preserves etc). Even if you're not a huge fan of meat, you can support them by buying other deli goods from them.

Baldwin's trade is seriously impacted by parking issues, really?

No, I don't doubt your reporting of what you were told. I knew where it came from, I'm just surprised.

Oh no, I've used CG gas for the last 8 years. They did really well patching up our old boiler and brilliantly fitted a new one when it was past repair. Please do post details when you have them, I would definitely keep using them.

New CG Gas address details etc now posted over here.

I see no problem with Green Lanes being seen as the centre for Turkish food in London, in the same way that Southall is THE place you go to for the best food from India and Pakistan. In fact it would really put us on the map and encourage culinary competition between businesses. What I do fear is that local amenities will be lost. Laundrettes and hardware shops aren't sexy and don't get reviews in the Sunday glossies but they are the lifeblood of communities.
And yes, the protection racket is alive and well despite really valiant efforts from the Police and Haringey

Right, we do need facilities and businesses for everyday life not just eating out. This is a residential area as well as a Turkish culinary centre. The residential part should not be overlooked but seems to be that it is. The parking along our streets at nights is a problem- lots of noise when people return to their cars and dont take into account that some people are home working, trying to relax or even sleeping.

Clearly living in a place like this has its many advantages but the march of the restaurants is a worrying trend.

I agree with the above. The noise at night is a problem.

Hello all,

Thought this would be the right moment to introduce myself..

Yes Muna's closed a few months ago..myself and a friend will hopefully be opening a live music lounge /cocktail bar that serves fresh tapas/food from around the world..

Some( if not all) of our walls will also be used as canvasses for various artists to work on. We have many more ideas for the space, most of them music/art orientated...but we'd welcome and appreciate your thoughts and ideas!

Hope we're not disappointing anyone with this project:)...and that this is a positive step toward contributing something a little diiferent to Harringay!

oh, sounds fab! When do you plan on opening?
