Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I had a meeting with Nilgun Canver this morning with some surprisingly promising results.

1. She's asked me to present the results of the survey at the next Green Lanes Strategy Group so that they can fully understand what our priorities are and then agree how to take the issues forward.

2. A positive and promising reaction to my suggestion to develop a Local Charter for Harringay - more on that further down the line.

Both very encouraging pieces of news. Thank you, Hugh.
Sounds promising Hugh. Well done. :)
Hugh, oh dear, you're fast. If anyone is wondering Nilgun Canver in question is Cllr. Nilgun Canver who is a Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Safer Communities on Haringey Council, St. Ann's Ward Cllr. Harringay ward resident and the Chair of the Green Lanes Strategy Group. It's better to declare it properly. Yes, yes, it is your idea and I have promised that we will seriously consider it.
About the survey, as I have stated before it largely reaffirms the current priorities and I am happy to have a discussion over it at the next GLSG.
From April 1 2009, a requirement of local authorities will be to demonstrate how they inform, consult and involve local residents in their decision making process as part of The Duty To Involve, I would suggest that meeting the request to develop a local charter that has been brokered through this community forum (it is not Hugh's idea but the government's) would be a good start to helping the council to meet this requirement.
Thanks Nilgun. It's great to have you comment here. Please feel free to add any additional information you feel is appropriate.

For me the important issue isn't about whose idea anything is or isn't. I'm more interested in seeing issues move forward.
Well done again, Hugh. I do hope a move towards a local charter empowers our community to rise above council politics and resolve some of the key community concerns i.e betting shops, Arena complex parking/traffic flow, men only drinking clubs etc. I'm particularly concerned about the betting shop developments. Harringay has become a very popular area for young families and we have two teenage daughters who have to travel past these shops everyday on their way back from school. Do we really want our young people exposed to these influences? Do our local councillers that live in the area have young families?
I forgot to add our other community challenge of illegal HMO conversions, another barometer of our council's efficiency. I am not against flat conversions where it is done with social responsibility; however, cramming numerous bedsits into the Ladder/Garden houses only benefits the speculating Landlord.
