Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Well, exactly one month after the 'hand over' to Veolia from Enterprise, I've got a few observations about how they are doing in my little bit of N4.

  1. Delays in removing waste resulting in more waste being added to the piles.  Enterprise were no angels but I rarely had to report fly tipping more than once, nor did I see it the day after I reported it. At the moment, I am seeing fly tips lasting several days, post report, and I'm having to report more than once.
  2. Haphazard removal - so a pile of black bags are removed from around a bin near a school but a (clearly visible) pile of fly tipping in the Passage (also near the school, also reported) 100 m away is left behind. 
  3. Cleaning is much more thorough than before when its done, but long periods when there is no street cleaning. In particular, Harringay Passage is being neglected (I'm removing recyclable and 'clean' rubbish to my bins, or else it would be much worse than it is in my adopted stretch).
  4. Dog poo is not being removed (whatever the cabinet member might say about reporting every single turd and requesting removal). I don't want a repeat of the notorious dog shit blog post but I will if the turds are not removed.
  5. Green Lanes is noticeably cleaner and the 'hoover down the middle' approach appears to have been replaced with more effective methods. The head roads, i.e. the tops of the roads leading into Green Lanes, should be swept daily. I'm not sure this is happening daily, although, again, when it is done, its done well.
  6. Cleaning after refuse collection: early on, having seen a street cleaner on the same day clearing up all the mess left post refuse collection, I had hoped that the method had been adopted whereby street cleaners and refuse collection are scheduled together. This, however, appears to be a one off and, as my refuse is collected on Friday, the street usually looks pretty bad by the end of the weekend.
  7. Bins continuing to to be left to overflow on Ladder roads and not emptied enough, notably Pemberton and Seymour in my patch.
  8. Graffiti cleaned promptly and effectively.

Helpfully, I have been provided with this information:


- Main roads and the first 50 metres or first junction of headings are to be swept daily

- Harringay Passage should currently be swept 3 times a week Monday, Wed and Friday.

- The removal of dog mess should be carried out when providing the scheduled sweeping regime.

- Street cleaning bags should be collected after the scheduled sweep has been carried out. Our new waste contractor (Veolia) has been working on dedicated collection locations for sweepers to leave bags to be collected.

The full schedule for a twice weekly clean of roads should be available by the end of May


However, can I urge people to report all poor street cleanliness, fly tips etc using the report a problem button on the right hand side of the home page. Doesn't matter is you think someone else might do it, better a few reports of the same problem, than none at all.

How much dog shit left in the gutter do you think would be reasonable?
Anette has highlighted another major failure of communication here where I've added some comments. I'm only looking at one small patch of N4/N8 between Mattison Road and Hewitt Road. Other people are reporting problems from other areas so its not just our 'village' that is having problems completing their tasks (I've not gone nuts talking about villages - Veolia refer to their style of street cleaning as 'village sweeping')

A useful observation and a fair question for Veolia and for Haringey Urban Environment Service.

Could you please confirm that you've passed this on to the Veolia email address given by Fabrice Bouchon. You may also want to copy in the Environment Department.

I agree - every tree on my bit of 7SisRd had a purple bag yesterday afternoon :(

I am not impressed with Veolia so far.

 

- Twice, our rubbish collection has been a day late.

 

- Once our recycling bin has been dumped on our flower bed crushing that which was beneath.

 

- Once our wheelie bin was left in the middle of our path. It's not a big path, and they could put it back where they took it from. My objection is 1) that it's hard to pass this bin, and 2) it's a clear sign to any potential burglar that nobody is home!

 

- Once I arranged a hazardous waste pickup. Very old gas cylinders with some gas still inside. Veolia were aware of this when they arranged the collection. I left them out on the arranged morning, but they were only collected a day later with no explanation. Did they collect them, or did the dodgy metal collectors take them? I'm supposed to dispose of waste responsibly, not allow anyone to take it. That's why I called them and didn't take it upon myself to find a suitable hole for them. I could be fined for incorrectly disposing of waste I believe. But they don't make it easy to be a good citizen! More concerning is that they knowingly had me leave potentially dangerous items out and then didn't pick them up for over 24 hours. Had a kid and a lighter come along....... We may have come home to a very nasty surprise!

 

- Twice I have called at around 19:00 and have been holding for over 30 minutes before giving up. Are they there at 19:00? Most people either answer phones or leave a message saying they've gone home. Leaving people on eternal hold is just bad manners! If they are supposed to be there, they are clearly not (in enough numbers to be effective), or are not putting an out of hours greeting on their phone lines. I suspect the latter to be frank.

 

- Twice I have reported that my street hasn't been swept in weeks. There is clear evidence of this. Call backs have been promised to no avail. The road still hasn't been swept! It's Allison Road in case Veolia care.

 

I shall be calling the Chief Exec's office tomorrow to voice my concerns. This just isn't good enough!!

 

I've also had the bin dumped in the middle of the path.  Good luck with the chief exec tomorrow.

Also not impressed with Veolia

 

I've had both wheelie bin and recycling bins left in the middle of the path, plus a fair amout of what was in the recyling bins strewn around the front garden. 

 

There is a near permenent pile of flytipped refuse at the top of Chesterfield Gardens which is intermitently cleared, but leaving overspill like empty larger cans and chicken bones behind.

 

I also arranged to have some broken shelves taken away, and whilst Veolia were very helpful on the phone, they failed to say that when they said they'd come and collect on Wednesday morning, what they meant was they'd come and collect in the small hours of the morning.  I put the shelves out at 6.30, and when i phoned to complain they'd not been collected, was told 'oh the lorry would have come way before that'.

 

 

I am also really annoyed with having my front garden look like a bombsite each time our rubbish and recycling has been collected.  It is also a security issue as it is give away that the house is empty if the front of the house looks like that all day.  3 boxes and lids and the wheelie bin strewn all over the front garden and path is not a nice welcome home and it kind of puts you off sorting your rubbish.

A solution to one 'mystery' spotted by Liz and many others. During the first weeks when Veolia took over the contract there seemed to be a marked delay in clearing some dumping and fly-tipping.

I asked why a particular dumped armchair - reported on 7 May 2011 - was still there on on 14 May - with some waste bins added. The reply today explains that:

"Regrettably, it was not noted until 10 May 2011 that some of the report a problem e-forms generated after the commencement of the new waste contract were not being automatically sent to our new waste contractor (Veolia). It was ascertained they were in fact being sent to our previous contractor’s email address which was no longer in operation.

As soon as this problem was identified the Information Technology Service was contacted in order for the system to be updated with the correct details. Unfortunately it would appear that your report was one of those that was sent over to our previous contractor therefore was lost in the system. 

Once your follow up enquiry was received arrangements were made for the dumped items to be removed."

I would like to give Veolia some positive feedback.  Since the changeover there has been a much greater presence of street cleaners in my area, and particularly up by the station area.
