Gating the Ladder
How would you feel about gating the passage ways of the Ladder? I could be completely wrong (as I don't use the passageways) but it appears to me that there are more costs than benefits to having free access to passways. They are poorly overlooked and offer too many opportunities to a criminal - no escape routes for victim in the passage way, quick escape route for criminal from street. These areas could be kept for wheelie bin storage or something more creative instead.

The Safer Neighbourhood Team organise the above classes which are very popular. They are held at Haringey United Reform Church on Green Lanes in junction with Alison road.

There's youths staggering up Allison Road on the weekend, shall we close that as well?
I use the passage, morning, afternoon and evening and would prefer that it be kept open 24hours. We purposely didn't buy a property on or near the passage due to such issues.
There is permanent cctv located on the passage, none of these work.
If there had of been any convictions for dumping, leaving dog mess and anti social behaviour, surely this would be a deterrent rather making everyone else suffer.
The council and police are great and spending thousands on posters, cctv and surveys but until people see that they can actually be convicted of such offences, these minor crimes will continue.

I suspect the issue about what is dumped in the passage relates to one about HMOs and their landlords. Often it is clothing and household things which are chucked out because someone has done a flit or been thrown out on their ear. Landlords don't want attention from councils about why they have to throw out so many suitcases etc so just put them in the passage. Also bags of clothes put out for these strange 'collection' companies get taken and rummaged. The other day two gas boilers were dumped at some point in the morning by , I suspect two bone idle builders across the road.
I do live near the passage and am not actually that disturbed by people in the passage but it is people staggering up the road and yelling in the street at the weekend who cause noise at night. A weeing drunk could be seen at 10.00 the other morning using a parking meter near the post office for his needs.
As B2 says, we can't gate the roads off...can we? Hmmmm...

i think that there are enough issues and concerns to warrant a public consultation and remedies by the Council.
I don't think it's fair to say that people shouldn't buy near the passage. Someone has to live there and not everyone is familiar with issues such as public pathways alongside your property before they buy. Also we buy what we can afford.
A relatively recent development in local commuinities have been wardens who are local community members that address local concerns. I am sure we could get a few nominations from this website ;o) They could be the keepers of such keys to the passageway and of course would get a small fee for their time, opening and closing the gates. Depending on an external company like Accord is expensive.

I never said people shouldn’t buy near the passage, I said that’s why we didn’t. You can’t move near a motorway and then complain about the noise, well you can, but you get the drift.
An idea I had a while back was a volunteer surveillance group. You could pick a day every few weeks and have one or two of you walking up and down the ladder passage for a couple of hours then swapping, seeing who poos, who pees and who dumps (in the litter sense not the K9). I think the dog poo is usually done first thing in the morning or last thing at night.
This could be done anonymously so you just look like you are walking down the passage.
I have challenged people before, but wouldn’t recommend or do so again, you gain more information by seeing where these people live, what they drop, taking photos etc.
I understand this is quite difficult to organise and implement but could prove to be a great way to gain information and ‘catch’ people in the act and possibly pass the information on to the police and the council.

BT: If I had know what a nuisance that passage would be I would NEVER have bought near it. It's not exactly fair to compare it to a motorway, it looked innocent enough when we viewed the property whay back when. If only I had known...
If I could have a gate either end of Seymour Road, I'd be a happy middle aged hoodie, who would not be woken up by drunken shouting several times a week. I can dream.

We could always put cameras in rocks! Not real rocks of course (know any good artists?). MI6 were caught out doing this over in Moscow. Using WiFi you could then sit back and watch out for bad behaviour from the comfort of your own home. Now that's fly on the wall TV. And about as interesting. ;)

Well I do feel for anyone living on or close to the passage, my friend has dog poo in bags and condoms over his fence on a regular basis.
We looked at a flat on the passage but the first thing we thought of was not necessarily anti social behaviour but easy targets for potential burglars. The flat we looked at even had a door onto the passage.
I would be 100% oppose to closing the passage at any time.
Since I have been here they have installed cameras, mirrors, signs, upgraded lights, dog poo bins, have litter patrols and a certain police presence, occasionally.
There is a bloke who set up something along the lines of “Friends of Harringay Passage” who campaigns for various issues, I’ll see if I can’t find something about him/them.

That might be Paul Mckay that you're thinking of Birdy. He's a member of this site but is hardly on here. Paul has campaigned for years on all things regards Harringay Passage. Hugh has his details.

Matt, the cameras in rocks could be matched with speakers disguised as tree branches and when we see miscreants up to no good we could shout really loudly at them...works apparently!!!
