Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Can you offer storage space to a client at Haringey Migrant Support Centre?

Can a Harringay Online member help a client at Haringey Migrant Support Centre, who is in urgent need of storage space?

This is a gentleman who lived until recently at Colorado Apartments, by New River Village. He is now in hospital and is expected to remain there for at least six months. As a result, he has lost his housing association flat.

His furniture – a bed, cooker, washing machine, fridge and microwave – are still in his former flat and the housing association will throw then out unless they can be put into storage.

He can't afford storage at the moment and has no one else who can pay for it. Haringey council has been approached but won't help.

HMSC is applying for hardship grants on his behalf to pay for storage but, in the meantime, we're trying to prevent the housing association throwing away his belongings.

I'm wondering if any HOL members might have – or know about – a space we could use to store his goods until the new year, while we sort out funding.

If you can help, please email Concetta at hmscgrants@haringeymsc.org

Have you tried these guys? https://www.streetstorage.org

We have indeed. Unfortunately, they don't have the space. Thanks, though!

Hi Concetta. How much is 6mths storage in a private facility (eg. Big yellow shed)? I'd be happy to chip in a bit and suppose others on here would do the same.

Great question! I've collected about half a dozen quotes and it ranges from about £900 to about £1500 for that period. That's our long-term plan, once we get over the bump of funding.

Does the migrant centre have a bank account people could transfer a donation into for this purpose? I'll put some in and maybe others will too. Then if you hit the target its great news but if not there will be some money to help this guy start again when he gets out of hospital.

We would be extremely grateful for any support from HOL members. Our website is here: http://haringeymsc.org/

If you donate via our Localgiving page, please mention in the message that you're from HOL and why you're contributing, so we can make sure the money reaches the right person.

Done! Its not much but hopefully a start.

Thanks. That's very kind of you.

I've donated too.

Do we know how much storage space will be needed, roughly, in square feet or square meters? We have some stuff stored at Safestore in Wood Green, and at the moment they offer half-price storage for the first eight weeks, for new customers. The facilities there are very good and secure. We are well aware of how pricey storage can be in London, and would be happy to chip in something for this gentleman.

Hello, it's roughly 40sq ft. I did get a quote from Safestore, and it included that offer. It's great to get a personal recommendation, though. Thanks!

I second that - had a very good experience with Safestore. I even bargained them down by about £10 a month. The problem is that after two months it does go up substantially - maybe they might be inclined to be generous in this situation. (Worth asking, as it is Christmas...)
