Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

after getting an invitation for 'next door' through my letter box, i learned from a neighbour that this is "a multi-million pound venture capital set-up based in california". apparently, their ultimate aim is data mining.

no thanks!

Thanks for the heads-up

HoL is a much better bet, non-commercial and truly local (though occasionally the tone of replies to posts can be offputting).Even better is our local street Whatsapp group, set up last March before lockdown and still going strong.

Just out of interest, does anyone know what happens to HOL content in the future once the current owner can no longer maintain it?

Hi Maddy, That's great to know about the whatsapp group - can you please tell me how to join?

Many thanks

Depends which street you live on, Fenella - some streets have them and some don't.

A lot were set up in response to the first lockdown as away to see who might need help.  Mine (Warham) is still going strong and is a great local resource

Personally, I am happy with HoL.

Some information about Nextdoor can be seen at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nextdoor

Thanks. Somehow, I’d never read that!  Having done so, I suppose I should change my spiel on the company from describing it as a multi-million dollar venture to a multi- billion dollar one!

Many thanks for this useful warning/caution.  Especially worrying that in the U.S. 'Next Door' was criticised for racial profilling.  Also that one of the founders and owners of 'Next Door' failed to be a particularly good neighbour.

Picking up a point made by Hugh about Facebook, I recently read Shoshana Zuboff's book "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism" which argues that we are less the users of services than the product being sold. So I'm now wondering how many "free" or subscription-based online services are NOT mining and selling our data.

Much of what Zuboff sets out in the book can also be found in her YouTube videos. Anyone got any views of her work? Pro- or anti- I'd be interested.
