Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Thanks to Joyce for pointing out the following from Haringey Council’s website.

Continuing our waste collection services in these uniquely challenging times

Haringey and Veolia are working hard together to ensure that a full range of waste collection services continue to be provided across the borough.

As is now the case across our society, coronavirus has had an impact within our workforce. Our staff are essential key workers and are doing their best, so please bear with us in these uniquely challenging times.

With many people now having to limit the amount of travelling they do and stay at home, we are seeing more waste produced at the kerbside and this is increasing pressure on waste services.
You may, as a result, experience some disruption or delay to our collections but we will keep these to a minimum.

If we don't collect your bin on the usual day, we should collect it the next day. If we don't manage to come and collect your bin for a week, please email: enquiries.haringey@veolia.com or call: 0208 885 7700.

You can help to reduce the amount of waste you produce by:

  • Reusing and recycling where you can - and ensuring that recycling is clean and dry
  • Using your bins correctly, as well as squashing containers and flattening boxes
  • Ensuring all rubbish bags are securely tied to help prevent spills and protect our collection teams and the public
  • Not putting tissues in the recycling
  • If you are self-isolating, please also ensure you stick to the Government's 'Stay at home' advice, which states you should:
  • Store personal waste – such as used tissues and disposable cleaning cloths – securely within disposable rubbish bags
  • Place these bags into another bag, tie it securely and keep it separate from other waste
  • These bags should be put aside for at least three days before being put in your usual external general waste bin
  • Not take this, or any waste, to your local Waste and Recycling Centre - it is now closed

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Yes I remember seeing something earlier on the website about not using this time for a massive Spring Clean/chuck out, as they don't want to be overwhelmed. On the plus side, we're probably all buying less stuff.

HMO tenants next to me have filled all four wheelie bins (two are the extra large capacity type) with clothes and household chuckouts. The actual black bin waste bags are teetering on the top of all that.     I saw two bin-divers going through it a couple of days later, and it was a worse mess afterwards.     Duh.

Seen scavenger teams are out and vehicles full of Rubbish

Still plenty out there

Finger Crossed after this Virus problem

The Councillors get enough pressure to increase Haringey Enforcement Teams

Not forgetting that the Act allows Authorities to also claim back Costs of prosecution                                  Which can got towards costs of Enforcement Officers

I wonder if you can sue Councillors if they fail to stop items being dumped on High way

Saw a fridge and washing machine in the road on todays Journeys

Why would you want to sue a councillor for someone else dumping rubbish?

Because their decision to charge for disposal of bulky items led to a big increase int he dumping of large items which the rest of us pay for though our Council Tax and by obeying the rules and paying for our own bulky disposals.

I completely agree Neil that the bulk waste disposal charge was an idiotic and counter productive thing to bring in, and sadly something that almost all English local authorities charge for now, but it is what it is and doesn’t excuse anyone chucking stuff out with a “now that’s someone else problem” attitude.  In my street almost all large item dumping is carried repeatedly out by HMO landlords at two properties.  It’s not for want of money that they do it.

It's rather buried on the council's website and not mentioned at all (that I could see) on Veolia's, but I just rang and was told there will be no more bulky items collections after this week, and this week is fully booked.

It's very noticeable around this area that stuff is building up around council bin areas and bulky items are being left in the street. Yesterday there was a blatant fly tip going on on our street and it was builders waste being repeatedly brought by trolley from the small housing estate that's between Southey Road and Roslyn Road, called Chiltern Works. However on calling the appropriate people due to the current issues no one was able to come out and catch them in the act or do anything about it. Today the bins have been cleared but all the rubble is still there but hopefully has been reported.
