Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Last October I raised the issue that possible street closures in surrounding areas would displace traffic our way.

One of the areas was Crouch End.

A consultation for those living/working in the area is in progress and one of the options being consulted on is the closure to through traffic (except for buses, emergency vehicles and cyclists) of one or more major roads, such as The Broadway.

A traffic survey for the Crouch End project suggests such a change might mean 2000 more vehicles a day in both directions for Wightman.

Harringay residents can make their views known via the questionnaire.

To complete the questionnaire go to:

https://www.haringey.gov.uk/parking-roads-and-travel/roads-and-stre...

After the initial section you can opt to only complete the one on traffic. The deadline is 2 February.

Rory, this is absolutely right. I will support the continued temporary gating of the gardens and closure of Hermitage Road and I will support the future filtering of Crouch End Broadway IF Wightman Road is also filtered.

Facebook Post from Haringey Living Streets Our first meeting of the year will be held on Monday 24th February at 7.30pm in the Green Rooms, Wood Green, N22 6UW (please ask at the Green Room reception for directions to the meeting room).  The agenda will include:- Updates from Haringey Council and current schemes (including the Crouch End Liveable Neighbourhood Scheme)

This is the thread where a Crouch End resident posted the details of the councillor responsible for the environment and traffic (and the Wightman Rd closure) inviting a pile on.

One thing I forgot to mention which came up at the Transport Forum last week. It seems TfL are doing a review of buses and routes. (My words... they may express it differently.)

I suggested a  small hoppa bus for Wightman Road and the Ladder. I used as a reference the 318 which goes from Stamford Hill to the North Mid on a long route which takes in all the back streets behind Tottenham High Road. It is very popular and a real benefit for older people, parents with buggies and anyone who can't do the very long walk to the High Road. Councillors strongly advocated for this bus and found partial funding for it - they were right.

Would a similar bus routed along Wightman which can get to Green Lanes etc have a positive impact and reduce traffic? Its just a thought. What do people think about formalising such a proposal from Harringay?

Eddie ( OAE ) suggested this years ago but nothing happened . I think TFL claimed that the Ladder was adequately served.

Previous discussions on a bus route along Wightman Rd here, here and here.

Joanne McCartney very graciously asked the mayor about it (here).

OAE collected over 250 signatures from local residents in favour (here).

Ah Zena, John D and John McM, you have made an old man very nostalgic. I really got to know my Wightman neighbours in the cause of a Morrison bus. Or was it a horse-drawn tram we were looking for? anyway it was a while ago, and maybe we still had our Lollipop man at Mattison junction.

I'd be interested in the traffic origin/destination of Wightman Road.  I'm all for a bus route if there's a local need but we need to understand whether it'll impact the overall traffic load on Wightman too.  If Wightman is mainly through-traffic it's unlikely to make a noticeable difference and is an 'also' rather than a solution to core problem we're discussing here.

I tried to work some of this out before looking at the traffic flows from the last traffic count (I mapped them here previously https://batchgeo.com/map/2f4e10d6837dc467e22771242386901a )

It looks like for each stretch of Wightman (which has ~ 110k cars passing through) there are around 5 up/down streets with about 20k cars going up and roughly the same number down (with an exception for Warham which has nearly 20k cars by itself).

It's hard to draw a solid conclusion with the limited data. My gut would be half to two thirds through traffic I reckon.

Saying that, I reckon that the number that is through traffic through the area is a fair bit higher.

Are those numbers hourly, daily, weekly, annual? Sorry if it says on the map but I didn't spot it.

They are for the week of 6-12 January 2016.

Thanks. For a week in October just before the Middle Lane trial the figures for  similar locations on Tottenham Lane were 51,953 northbound (2016 62,029) and 53,284 southbound (2016 58,864).
