Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Christmas is coming and the scammers are out in force.

Thankfully Polly Toynbee in the Guardian is on the case.

There are lots of alternative shoe box schemes out there - that operate with no ulterior motive.

Last year, I supported one run be a church in Enfield and I am sure there are more local churches and organisations too that run them.

The article links to those alternatives and also to a template letter you can send to your children's school if they get involved in this scheme.

So "how many schools in this area are being conned" is your question. Well, you asked it, and you can answer it by engaging   direct   with each   local   school, then you will know the answer. Job done.    Then it becomes a matter of local interest.

I hope this site won't become devoted to 'whataboutery' - it is a hyperlocal community forum in the main part. For example, the only Harringay-specific connection with this story is that Graham's father, Billy Graham, held many evangelical rallies at Harringay Arena in the fifties.
The other thing I note is that Polly Toynbee is vice-president of Humanists UK, so one would expect a raised eyebrow from her about all things religious.

The most irksome aspect of the 'whatabouteries' is their insistence on donning the mantle of the world's guardian.  People are not stupid - even as children - and are more capable of looking after themselves than you believe.  Let us decide for ourselves, please, what is right and what is wrong.  We may or may not agree with you but the choice is for the individual concerned, not for the obtruder.

Polly Toynbee supports the idea of filling shoeboxes and giving at Christmas and mentions those distributed by local food banks however I think she is right to reveal that the evangelical church concerned has an alterior purpose in getting other people to give on their behalf and that is their aim of gaining conversions and spreading their associated right wing agenda. This is against bible teaching of giving without wanting anything in return!

I'd just like to request anyone interested in this topic to read up about Franklin Graham and Billy Graham if you haven't already, before making up your mind.

Personally I have no objection to bible stories being told to children. But I can't figure out why people start getting upset when I tell their children about Lot being inebriated and seduced by his daughters, or Judah mistaking his veiled daughter in law for a...
