Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Reviewing Cllr Ejifor's recent BBC Radio interview and behind the scenes goings-on that preceded it, local government website Room 151 flagged the possibility of a referendum to allow a council tax increase in excess of 6%:

In his interview, Ejiofor raised the prospect that Haringey could take a different approach and become the first council to hold a referendum to propose an increase in council tax levels above the government’s cap, currently at almost 6% including the social care precept.

He said: “Council tax levels have been frozen in this borough for the past eight years. I think there is a conversation to be had about whether or not we move to correct that dislocation of council tax revenue.

“We will look at what we need to do to fund things going forward. Then we will let you know.”

A referendum? WTF? Utterly spineless. Get in there and raise council tax like you said you would in the election.

As has been pointed out again and again.

Fair play to the council for going this route. I’ll vote in favour but I don’t expect it to pass. Hope I’m wrong but I do think we need a plan B for a rejection by the public.

Slightly paradoxically I’d have voted in favour if the last council had proposed this.  I don’t trust the financial competence of the current lot.

Agreed :(

From 2012/2013... OK, so I missed this. The whole "raison de etre" of Haringey was to have the majority in the east slightly subsidised (i.e. not quite until the pips squeak) by the wealthy minority in the West. It really hasn't worked out that way because central government capped the council tax thresholds and now this kind of thing.

Can we just do the 6% increase right now and have a referendum on the rest?

If Council Tax is increased, will the cuts in services be reversed ? Or will we pay more for the status quo ?

Although I'm not adverse to the idea, proposing this at the same time as we have a Brexit No Deal on the horizon frightens the pants off me. Our family really don't have the spare cash to manage such a significant double whammy increase on our household expenditure. We don't have a magic money tree in our home either :(

How much would an extra 6% raise? Anyone know? ... maybe a council estimate is available.

The projected council tax income for 2017/18 was £93.8m so 6% would be about an extra £5.6m if it’s all collected.  For Band D payers 6% would be about an extra £95 a year, £1.82 a week.  Band E would be an extra £115 or £2.22 a week. Most properties in the borough fall into those bands.

To put it into context the amount needing to be spent on adult social care is £77.8m and children’s services £46.5m.  Council tax income currently supplies about 37% of overall Haringey spend.

Sounds like they just need to do it already

I know it sounds attractive but it would barely wet the bottom of the cup. There would still need to be major cuts.

Er you just did subscribe [write underneath] Anka......   :-)

I recall your reasoned responses on that earlier discussion. I was not a respondent antagonistic or otherwise on that thread.
