Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all,

At 4:30 AM on Saturday water started pouring through the ceiling, down the walls and though the light sockets (!) of my flat and all above/below flats until about 8cm deep - pretty much destroying everything. The fire brigade eventually switched the mains off at the road.

An "incident  manager" from the council arrived five hours later and took names and numbers and told us our flats would need gutting and we would need to move out and that someone more senior would be in touch to organise alternative accommodation

Up to now (Monday evening) no-one senior has been in touch despite constant chasing - we've had to check ourselves into hotels etc.)

Council black-holes are an aside to the main concern. (Don't read this next bit while eating!) The fire brigade informed us that the building around the tanks was revolting and unsecured - meaning open to the elements and full of pigeons, pigeon feathers, pigeon poop and dead pigeons. When the pipe burst it picked all of this up and filtered it down though our flats.

Environmental health need to be informed obviously as a potential health hazard but is there anything else we should be considering here? Would appreciate any advice, thoughts or similar council experiences.

Zena Brabazon

Cllr, Harringay ward

Please email me on david.schmitz@haringeylibdems.org and leave your phone number.

I hadn’t seen Cllr Brabazon’s reply when I responded a few minutes ago.

As a sitting councillor, she’s in the best position to speak to Council officials about your rehousing, but at the same time I’d be happy to discuss your options for getting help in claiming for your out-of-pocket expenses and the damage to your belongings. Also, if you’re a leaseholder rather than a tenant we could talk about that as well.
