Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I got my leaflet today stating that from October you have to pay £75 a year for garden waste collection. Further bulk collections will cost £25 for 4 items then £10 per item. If the dustman break your wheelie bin or you don't have one you have to pay £30.

I rang Haringey who transferred me to veola. Veola say it's Haringey council who decided they need to save 20 million for social care.

I am disgusted. I have lived in this borough for 53 years and all this is going to do is make people dump rubbish in the streets in a borough that has the worst fly tipping in England.

As far as saving money for social care, already the council tax bill went up to cover this. Haringey council should stop wasting money on other things.

I for one will not pay £75 and I suggest Haringey think again..

Lou, I feel the same, absolutely furious. All 3 of my ward councillors in West Green voted for these measures (and incidentally for the HDV), so might be checking whether yours did if you haven't already. Smart Water, that's actually brilliant! I'm probably going to order some bin labels with my address on them, something like this

Elections in May 2018- just saying...

Yep. Tho' suspect some are stepping down and therefore don't care...

The problem is that despite most people's dissatisfaction with the council they still vote Labour in local elections. The smaller and smaller Libdem opposition on the council has an increasingly difficult job holding the Labour majority to account. If local residents really want change round here they need to break the Labour stronghold by sending a strong message at the next council elections next year - thing is... will they?

The time is ripe for some Green councillors in Haringey, with so many environmental issues here.

Karen, please can we talk about what is actually happening on the Council. On the key issue facing the Council - the HDV (Homes Destruction Viciousness) - principled LibDem councillors and principled Labour councillors are - in parallel - opposing a wrong, unethical and in some aspects duplicitous policy.

I don't know the current LibDem councillors as well as I got to know you and some of your colleagues in the last council. As I hope you'd agree, though we often disagreed, I had no problem working cross-party on various issues with LibDems who were acting in the wider public interest.

But to be frank, next May will probably be too late to switch votes or send "messages". Because our Tory Policy Kober Council intends to sign agreements which will be legally binding for twenty years. Leaving whoever takes over nominal political control to deal with a monstrous and powerful commercial company calling the shots.

Can I please suggest, Karen, that you talk to your LibDem colleagues and ask them to update you on the toxic, right-wing privatising agenda which many LibDem and Labour councillors are opposing.

Labour Party Selections in September/October this year - JUST SAYING!!!!

Why not get togther with the neighbours on you street and design a unique and prettier label to cover mOrie of thei ugly bin. There are sites that enable you to do so and raise £££ for charity.

Or stickers like this co. Offers

Thanks for digging up that quote about bins vs sacks, Lou. I was beginning to wonder if I dreamt it up.

I just called Veolia to follow up Joe's call and started by explaining the background to my call. I was given the same verbal reassurance as joe received and told that the choice of collection receptacle will be completely up to residents. They said unequivocally that there is no notion of residents having to qualify for non-bin collection. I was also told that you make your choice at the point of sign-up, when you pay.

How about dissipating your built up email drafting energies into a quick email to Veolia to seek written confirmation of the service options? If you don't want to, let me know and I'll drop them a quick note.

Thanks for the info Don. It will be interesting to know what proof we will have to provide that Veolia broke the bins? Photographic?

Thanks Katie for the stickers link.

Actually I have to thank you Hugh (or site admin!) and Alan Stanton. You posted on page 1 of this discussion a link back to a previous thread and it was Alan who put the link in to the council's documents and summerised it. I just went looking so I could find the exact link for my furious draft email, in which I was going to bring up the site visit issue.

I shall take your suggestion and and drop a line to Veolia when I get back this afternoon. If you get there first then that is great, but I don't think it will hurt if a few of us email Veolia saying that our neighours have phoned and we now seek written clarification on service options.

Honestly, you would think they would have put this info on the leaflet. How much energy have we all wasted trying to work out how we can cope with another bin?

Interesting £55 for smaller options isn't mentioned in the leaflet.

Odd, the council briefing paper suggests a fee of £55 for those that use sacks or the smaller bins and the minutes of the meeting suggested the reduced fees were agreed.
