Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Am I missing a trick here, as I have not seen anything on this on HoL.

A few weeks ago I got a note through the door from Thames Water to suggest that water meters are being installed for my (and I assume everyone's) homes. I had a quick look online to see this about smart meters.

Apparently we get two years before we start to be charged based on actual readings...

They are not compulsory.

That's not obvious from the letter.

You're right, it seems they are now allowed to install meters without permission in areas of water scarcity.

That is the point, I believe they are after 2 years!

The pamphlet says they are (on the last page of frequently asked questions). There are many discussions online regarding whether it is enforceable or not. If you refuse access (and they can't fit the meters on the street) some water companies will allegedly put you on a 'no access' tariff.

I was told yesterday by the guy installing the meter on the pavement outside that there was no choise, the meter was installed and that it would be enforced within 2 years and there was no choice in the matter.

I may also be missing something but as many on the other thread have attested to, my bills were significantly reduced by having a meter installed so I'm not sure why anyone would want to resist moving to being metered.

I agree Antoinette. I asked for one to be installed a few years ago and my bills have halved
I had one installed, my bills haven't halved as I know I waste water (love those long showers) but they are significantly cheaper.
I have a shower on my birthday if I need one or not!
We were previously billed on the assumption that we were a household of 5 people (I think). As we're two people, are careful with water and use collected rainwater for the garden, our true consumption has always been much lower than what the water rates were based on.
I'm in a one bed flat with no garden and I was previously billed at whatever rate they apply for that, so I'm pleased my bills have gone down.
