Water Meter - Do you have to have one ? If you do can you insist on having outside the house
Hi all ,
Thames water have been round saying they want to install a water meter .
They said it will have to be installed inside the house .
Firstly can we say 'No i don't want a meter'.
And secondly if we have to have one can we say we wan't it outside the house .

This link from ofwat will give you all of the information. According to the leaflet meters are not manatory, it is your choice, and most meters are outside the home.

Re. your first question, are you renting and did your landlord request it? Re. your second question - on their "frequently asked questions" they say "As your water supply pipe (the one running from our water main towards your home) serves one or more neighbouring properties as well as your own, an external meter would record everyone’s collective usage. In these cases we will have to fit a meter inside your home if possible." Are you in a flat? Maybe that's why. See page nine.
Interestingly this Telegraph article suggests your supplier can choose to install a meter at your home and charge you for the water you use if you live in an area where the Government has allowed compulsory metering and it can also force you to switch if you have recently moved into a property and it hasn’t already sent you an unmetered bill.

It's unusual for them to want to put a meter inside. Is it perhaps something to do with your wheelchair access (I remember you posted about disabled parking before). My experience is our water bills went down when we had a meter installed and I was happy enough with job. Turned up when they said, did a neat job etc. I would go back and just clarify why they want to put the meter inside. But I'm glad we got ours.

Agree with Anotinette on cost. Our bills dropped a lot when we changed to a meter. Our was installed outside without any fuss.

We have a 3 bed terraced house(not rented). It has mains stopcock ( 1 m down) just outside the house. I presume if they want to install a water meter they would have to dig around the area to install ? So it is must be easier to install under the kitchen sink but it will just be a pain having some come round to read it .

I still think it's odd they want it inside. Outside is more convenient for them too. Our stop cock is just inside our front garden gate with the meter in the pavement about a foot from the outside of our garden wall. I'd take a look in the pavement in your stretch of pavement and see if there are others there already. Every house on my stretch seems to have the same.

Outside they physically have to read it - open the cover and look.
Inside they can access it remotely via Wifi I think, more and more - i.e. minimal cost to them/consumer.

My neighbour had one under the sink, but it was impossible to get your head in there to read it. I had to use a mirror on the end of a stick, plus a torch to light it!

They're not mandatory and you can request to change it back within a year.
It took about £200 off my annual water bill when I got one (3 bed house).

We've been paying much less since moving to water meter (turns out, our house already had one installed but we didn't know until the fitter discovered it!) so I definitely recommend getting one. However, ours is outside.

Have you performed a leak test? (Turn off all the isolation taps under sinks and supplying bathrooms, take a meter reading, then one hour later take another one, if there is any movement you have a leak between the meter and your isolation tap).
We were being overcharged until it turned out that Rats had punctured a pin prick hole in our supply pipe just outside the building.

I had a water meter installed in the last place I lived, as it was a flat it had to be inside. It uses a short range wireless signal so that they can read it from outside the door so this was not a problem.
It was cheaper monthly than paying the flat rate (about 20% cheaper) but I have suspicions that this is just to get people to move to them and then they will slowly normalise the pricing.
