Problem with Sainsbury’s Identifying and Prioritising Vulnerable People for Online Shopping

Hello neighbours,

I am one the people with many underlying health issues, who received the official letter from the government identifying me as a vulnerable person. Theoretically, supermarkets should have received the government database of people who received this. Therefore, as a long-standing Sainsbury’s online shopper I should be on the Sainsbury’s list prioritising me, but I am not.

Having tried to phone them many times to explain, there is no opportunity to talk to a real person or an opportunity to email anyone. All I get is the attached screenshot saying that they can’t identify me as a vulnerable person.

If anyone has any ideas of how to contact them I’d really appreciate this. Publishing it may also help others facing same issue.

At the moment, I am lucky to have good friends and family locally who are fit enough to help me, but it would be good to have a back up plan in case they fall ill. Needless to say, I’ll also contact the support group on HOL if I need to. (Good to see HOL and volunteers doing this).

They do usually respond to messages on Twitter. Though not sure how fast it'll be in the current situation.

Hi Pavlos. As far as I’m aware you need to register here, your registration is checked against your NHS number (which you need to supply) and if you fall into the vulnerable category your details are passed on to supermarkets who then check you are on their database as an existing online delivery customer.the supermarket will hten email you to let you know your are on their priority list and release one delivery slot a week to you.

People who have received an instruction to shield are included as are those with the following conditions 

  • have had a solid organ transplant
  • have any cancer and are getting chemotherapy
  • have lung cancer and are getting radical radiotherapy
  • have cancer of the blood or bone marrow, at any stage of treatment - for example, leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma
  • have any cancer for which you’re getting immunotherapy or other continuing antibody treatments
  • have any cancer for which you’re getting a targeted treatment which can affect the immune system - for example, protein kinase inhibitors or PARP inhibitors
  • have had bone marrow or stem cell transplants in the last 6 months, or are still taking immunosuppression drugs
  • have a severe respiratory condition - including cystic fibrosis, severe asthma or severe COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
  • have a rare disease or inborn error of metabolism that significantly increases your risk of infection - for example SCID or homozygous sickle cell
  • are getting an immunosuppression therapy that’s sufficient to significantly increase your risk of infection
  • are pregnant, and have a significant congenital or acquired heart disease

And even then it's not instant. Tescos took about two weeks, followed a few days later by Sainsburys. Morrisons within the last week plus Iceland a day or two later.

The supermarket themselves send you an email before you can use the priority service.

The last I heard a couple of people million had tried registering.  All of these are then checked, I suppose to prevent fraudulent applications, the lists sent to supermarkets and then they check their customer lists.

Thsnks Michael. I’m already registered.. but the info hasn’t filtered through to Sainsbury’s yet.

That’s the point I was making. This registration does not take into account those who are like me are agoraphobic, those with mental illness, those like me who care for a vulnerable person so isolate anyway. In fact if you look further the gov also states you may be in this group but if you have anyone who can shop for you the site doesn’t allow registration to complete. Like always the government makes out that they are helping but they are not. 

I'd agree with Hugh - Twitter is a good way to go - perhaps try sending a DM? My partner is also on the vulnerable list and this is how we eventually managed to get in contact with Tesco.

The Gov.uk method worked fine for me Katie.  I registered as I have one of the conditions on the list,  which I assume was checked again my NHS number and about 10 days later had an email from Sainsbury’s that I was on their priority list for home deliveries.

That’s good! Our online shopping accounts are all in my name rather than my partner’s so we knew that wouldn’t work for us. Twitter was a quick fix though!

It may be that they are still going through the list and haven’t processed me yet. But thanks for your support. Hopefully they’d respond to Hugh’s tweet
