Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello

Sorry this is an exceptionally boring discussion but I've only recently moved onto the Ladder. And several times a week, we are finding people dumping their stuff in our front patio area by the bins. They are particularly dumping building debris that the binmen won't remove or bulky things like old carpets. All our bins have now been stolen and replaced by broken ones without lids too.

We have been having a bit of building work done so I'm not sure if people just think we'll throw away their own building debris for them or they don't realise anyone has moved in as due to people dumping stuff, the outside area does always look very messy. But it's really starting to get on my nerves as every time we shift one lot of broken wood or carpet, another lot appears. Because it takes a while for the council to come and remove it, people just add to it.

I know this isn't a big issue and I do see how dull it is but I just wondered if anyone else suffered from this problem on the Ladder. I just can't face ringing the council again and asking them to remove this stuff (as they must now think we are just trying to get rid of our old stuff on a weekly basis).

Any idea what I can do to discourage this? (Short of getting the council around again to shift this stuff, buying loads of pot-plants for the front to make it look more lived in and getting the foliage home from Homebase before anyone dumps anything again.)

Thanks!

If you put out plant pots, make sure you cement them in, to stop them going walkies. One sort of anti-social action tends to spill over into another sort, I find.

Re the rubbish - see the other post on photography! Or you can get dummy surveillance cameras pretty cheaply.
Mmm, that sounds really annoying. Any idea why they might be picking on your house? Are you next to any particular building?
Hello

I think the reason people are picking on our house is simply because:

a) Before we bought it, it was empty for a few months so it probably was a good place to dump stuff as no-one cared;
b) The people who lived here before were, erm, "anti-social neighbours" judging by the sheer number of police reports/court summons/tales from our street and didn't necessarily care that much about the state of the house;
c) We had builders in, so maybe people think we won't notice a bit more rubbish lying around.

Thanks for the tips - it seems a bit excessive to put up fake CCTV to monitor your bins but maybe I'll be driven to it if I acquire another carpet roll or two during the time I'm walking round the block. Although I will cement in my plant pots now I think of it...:-)
I didnt know what was the attraction of big plant pots, as the hassle of stealing such heavy things is surely not worth the few pounds saved. Then I read (on HoL?) that readymade big plant pots sell well at car boot sales...
People will pinch anything. We had a lovely bunch of foxgloves in our front garden, in a cheap plastic window box. Foxgloves stolen, but crappy window box left. Odd!

Nice window boxes left empty on the windows also haven't (touch wood) gone walkies.

I hope the buggers accidently ate some of the foxglove seeds - that would have served them right ;-)
Talk to the environmental control department at the council - or PM me and I'll tell you who to speak to there. They have a good team who, if you work with them, can sort these kinds of things out.
