Legal funding to fight Prevention of Harassment Letter over St Ann's Labour Fraud
I've decided that I am going to go ahead with the legal fight.
Bindmans have estimated that their initial advice on the Prevention of Harassment Letter will be up to £1,500. Funds are needed in advance, before Bindmans can start work. If anyone wants to contribute, Bindmans’ bank details are:

However, only on condition that you help ME out when necessary.
I got a grim warning from a friend quite recently, when she heard that I was standing in the elections. "Be careful," she said. "They manipulate the police into being their own private defence force."
So tyranny spreads. You maul a just a handful of people but know that many more will keep their mouths shut out of fear.

BTW, this is pretty much exactly what happened to me. Nice to see that they're stupid enough to issue them to journalists now. Do you think this will stop or should I push Bindmans harder for an IPO?

The journalist from the Croydon Advertiser is really getting some press for his Harassment Notice. The police seem to have been just as charming and polite in their delivery of this one as they were of mine. Telegraph, Daily Mail.
I didn't approach any of those papers over mine and I think that they're mostly into this one over the honey trap angle (yucky misogyny in other words).

As for the "they", according to a friend with whom I was chatting this afternoon, the "they" could be paid officers just as much as the elected autocrats. I have on previous occasions spoken about the Council not regarding the borough residents as their employers but instead having the same attitude as feudal barons had about serfs being an economic resource.
However, it did not until recently occur to me that this attitude of d'en haute en bas might have leached out from the political elite to their workforce. Thinking about it, though, it would be quite natural for the Labour clan, over the years, to have installed staff who shared their political viewpoint. Labour have been in power for so long it is probably a miracle that there are still some neutral and professional staff but I have heard of quite a few instances of obvious sectarianism. The culture of protecting the Party and flying to the harrassment orders probably saturates the whole shooting match by now.

I can't get anyone to confirm it (or deny it!) but I think the libdems are pushing for disciplinary action against some council stuff (possibly in planning) for political bias.

Lydia, your thesis appears to be supported by evidence from an unexpected source: a former Labour Deputy Leader. In Denis Dillon’s book “Lessons for the Big Society”, he writes:
[referring to Dillon’s co-author Bryan Fanning:] He was not (nor had ever been) unlike some of his colleagues and many senior Haringey Council officials, a member of the Labour Party.

emphasis added by me]I have no doubt that there are neutral, competent, professional staff at the council. However, I might add that the conflicts of interest to which the above 'overlap' phenomena tends to lead, could help explain its chronically poor performance. Over 40 years.

All this post proves is that you should read the Local Government Act 1989 before standing for election. Really is worrying that however many times I request that you read the legislation you fail to do so even though you are standing to be an elected member.

I, too, would be interested to know what you are talking about in this reference, Emine.
It is possible, of course, that Ms. Ibrahim might be referring to someone else - a serving councillor for instance, whose parked car - bedecked with party posters - was parked on one occasion within feet of a voting station. A couple of witnesses also told me that later on in the day she was actually grabbing people at the station and telling them whom to vote for. Clue-this person wasn't a Liberal Democrat.

John, It's the single most important piece of legislation on the statute book that governs the conduct and finance of local authorities. It also sets out the conduct of candidates and elected members. It was used as the basis for the prosecution of, amongst others, Dame Shirley Porter. Agree with Emine that it is rather a must read for potential and siting councillors. It is rather a turgid page turner though. Shame it's not available in the "For Dummies" series really.
