Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Don't Forget - Wightman Road Closed for 5 months from Next Tuesday (29th March)
In case it's escaped your notice or slipped your mind, Wightman Road will be closed to through traffic for five months starting next Tuesday 29th March.
This will be a significant dislocation to North London traffic movement. So much so that warning notices have been placed as far away as Archway. No doubt it will also have a significant impact on Harringay's traffic.
However, there really is no alternative to at least partial road closure. The railway bridge between Alroy and Wightman roads is being replaced and there will simply be no road for a few months!
One option the Council could have taken would have been to simply reroute the traffic via the Ladder rung roads. It is to their credit, however, they recognised that with over 16,000 vehicles a day using Wightman Road, this would have placed an intolerable burden on our narrow residential roads, already beset by undue traffic volumes.
After consultation with residents, the solution decided upon is to place blocks at regular intervals along Wightman Road, in effect creating clusters of two or three rung roads. Whilst this will retain unfettered access for residents. it will render the whole Ladder, including Wightman, useless as a rat run. Quite what it will mean for traffic in Harringay, Haringey and further afield remains to be seen. Those of us who have been working with the Council on this very much hope that traffic will quickly find other routes. It's fair to say, however, that at very best, we're going to experience some very heavy congestion on Green Lanes for a month or so.
At the same time, the Harringay traffic study will continue. The coincident timing of this piece of work with the bridge closure may be fortunate in that it will give the consultants an opportunity to study the outcome of diverting traffic away from Harringay.

Does anyone know when the recycling bins are going to be emptied? I wasn't sure if due to the road closure there was a delay, but the black bins have been emptied

Ours (Warham) were emptied as normal and on time today. Haven't had any problems. Are you on Wightman?

I am on Wightman road. I went to work early this morning and the bin wasn't emptied, but it might have happened by now. I will check.

I see that they were working on rebuilding the block at the top of Cavendish Road. ..think there are now 3 concrete blocks

Just came from Crouch End to the neighbourhood. Traffic is backed up and crawling from the Clock Tower to Green Lanes. Avoid if possible.

It's bizarre. I came along the same route on the W5 yesterday and it sailed along until it hit the roundabout by the petrol station, just past the YMCA, got stuck, and then sailed along again. There seems little pattern in what's happening.

I was today asking the man who runs the laundrette next to Medlocks whether his trade was suffering because of the traffic problems. He does not live nearby and has had to start taking the train. Besides that inconvenience he said that he was missing the trade of some customers who were in the habit of driving up Green Lanes and pausing to drop off their laundry. He then raised what to me was a new concern. He said that when Wightman Road was reopened, the railway bridge over Green Lanes outside Sainsburys would be worked on and that this would entail closing Green Lanes itself and that much of the load would be re-routed via Wightman Road. He was dreading the impact of this on his business but I have other concerns.
Can anyone shed light on this story? Is anything more than a brief maintenence/paint job required on the Green Lanes railway bridge?

That is a new one Dick, have not heard that before. I think we should raise it when we see Network Rail and Haringey officers on Weds at the St Paul's meeting.
