Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Appeal for watering our local street trees!
The Council's tree officer has asked us to point out that, with the dry weather, there are a few street trees looking quite thirsty.
Any planted in the last couple of years will be particularly susceptible to lack of water as their root systems aren't established, and they could easily die as a result.
If people can check the ones nearest their house (and encourage neighbours to) and give them a bucket of water every few days (or more frequently) until we get some rain that may help to keep them alive.
Water used for washing veg or washing up is fine as long as it hasn't got harsh detergents in it (bit of soap won't hurt the trees but machine powders might).
Most of the newer trees should have a pipe you can pour the water down, but if not, try to water the ground slowly at first to give the water a chance to soak in as it's been dry for so long. In return the trees give you shade, beauty and cleaner air. Pretty good deal.

It would be great if people could keep an eye on their local street trees generally, and let the council tree officer know if anything's wrong. Even better, join the Haringey Tree Wardens [haringeytreewardens.org.uk]
Part of the Tree Council, we are a friendly group keeping an eye on local street and park trees, helping the council plant new trees in the winter, and learn about tree ID and care while we do it.

Thank you for spreading the word about thirsty street trees. Some are beginning to look a bit distressed, I notice. I'll get my watering can right away!

The six new trees on Umfreville Rd have each had a 10-litre bucketful of water today, also one other tree at the top end (with severe but not recent bark damage) that looks like it needs a helping hand.

I'm interested in adopting a tree. I live near Ally Pally but don't drive so am always on public transport or pounding the pavements. Which means I notice street trees and what is happening to them.

Dry weather continues, time to water your local young trees again (I'm doing the seven in Umfreville Road today).
I was in Wood Green yesterday - nearly all the newly planted trees in the High Road improvement area are already dried out and dead - brown crispy foliage. A sad sight. Let's not let it happen here too.

There is a tree on my road that looks very unhappy and dry. I gave it a few watering cans worth of water the other day and will do more today.
How much should I give the tree to drink? I see it says a bucket full so would one 5 litre watering can be sufficient? And is it best to try water it every day?

I would have thought that the soil around the tree is very dry at the moment given how little rain we have had and how little of the rain that has fallen has been able to drain into the soil.
I often run a hose into the pipe at the tree's base and just leave it for 10-15 mins on dry days. So, if you have the energy, as much as you can Sally- you will find it will all go down I promise you- the tree on my road is like the a bottomless pit!
After that a bucket or two a day or every couple of days (more on hotter and sunnier days as the tree loses more water, less on cloudy overcast days if you do not have the energy) would do it no end of good. If it is just looking parched then you should be able to nurse it through to autumn ok... Good luck.
