Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Andy Newman (far left) with Gardens residents at the community garden

I am very sad to share the news that  Andy Newman of The Gardens Residents Association was taken ill suddenly and passed away on Sunday 24th October 2021.

Obviously this is a great shock to all who knew Andy. He was a great champion of his neighbourhood and was deeply involved in community life in Harringay. He leaves behind a lasting legacy including The Gardens Community Garden, the creation of which he led from a disused and vandalised railway tunnel and approach.

For those who didn't know him, there's a short video half-way down the page  here of Andy talking to briefly camera about a community event almost ten years ago.

I've been in touch with his partner, Karen, and she's asked me to pass on thanks from her and her children, Amber and Jasper, for the kind messages they received last week.

That is such sad news. Thoughts and condolences to Karen, Amber and Jasper. Rest easy Andy x.

Oh no, I'm really shocked and saddened. Andy was such a champion of our neighbourhood, a force for good and a really lovely person. My condolences to his family.

This has been terrible news for all who knew Andy. A very good man indeed. A huge loss.

This is just really sad, so awful to loose such a pillar of the community. My thoughts go to Karen, Amber and Jasper.

Andy was a wonderful man, very involved with the local community and his children's school North Harringay Primary. I enjoyed many a community event Andy organised with others and the of course the occasional ale at the Salisbury. A talented gardener Andy had a particular interest in echiums, a Mediterranean plant loved by bees. They are now doing well in the school gardens thanks to Andy :) Lots of love to Karen, Amber & Jasper

We didn't know Andy personally but saw him often as we use to live on the same road and loved the Gardens Community Garden. Sending love to his family.

Such sad news. I knew Andy from North Haringey primary days, where our respective children attended and from community activities and meetings over the years. He was a tireless worker for the community, truly a very nice human being whose wife and children can be so proud of, best wishes and love to them

I'm so very sorry to hear this awful news.

Andy was such a lovely man, a devoted partner and father, and a highly respected member of our community.

Much love to Karen, A and J xxx

I want to add my condolences to Karen and the family. Andy was such a stalwart and committed activist in the local community, it is hard to believe he is no longer with us. I knew him for over 20 years, and worked with him on many local issues, campaigns and events. He was very involved in the  Green Lanes Strategy Group, which worked for over 10 years to bring change and improvements to Green Lanes. Our coalition of ingredients, businesses, Council services like Enforcement and Environment, the police and other external agencies was very successful - much of it due to the commitment and staying power of individuals, Andy amongst them.

Andy was always there to lead on local consultations and events; the Lantern Parade, and community film shows in the Community Garden. The garden is beautiful, and along with the thriving Gardens Residents' Association, is a lasting memorial to him, his drive and determination.

He is greatly missed.

Thanks for posting this news. I knew and admired Andy as a tireless worker for his community.  We really need people like him. RIP.

Besides how Andy's passing has affected so many people, I'll still always think of laughing with Andy, him carrying that big star leading the lantern parade.

He did of lot of good for us all.

Such sad news, and such a shock too.

He did so much for the community and was a lovely man.
