Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The former police station in St Ann's Road is on fire. Fire fighters had to batter down the front door to get in.  It doesn't seem as if anyone was in the building but I cannot be sure of that. I was just passing so took this photo.

I took this at 6pm & looked under control then. They were letting people through the cordons (not cars yet though). I imagine the road will be closed till late night/early morning at least. The facade looks ok but the roof is gone & who knows what it's like inside. I live very near to this & every single person I've spoken to, the first thing they've said is 'bit suspicious isn't it, do you think they did it on purpose'.

The firemen I spoke to thought it was rather suspicious too,

Oh if only I'd known!  I didn't see any people there but the cordon was across the whole road so I turned around.  I'd already run 8km home from work, this added another 1km to my run. (this was about 7pm)

Interestingly, all the building equipment was cleared off the site before the fire started. Make of this what you may..

The piling rig went last Friday morning on a low loader. There actually wasn't much on site, as what was there before was either specialist demolition equipment or specialist groundworks equipment. Once it's done it's job it's moved on.

Hopefully the developer (Paul Simon?) has to reinstate exactly as it was before, after a thorough investigation as to why it happened. Ironic that it was absolutely pelting rain all last night and this morning. Must have been quite a conflagration to get this started.

Either that or the inevitable new plans, again after a thorough investigation, are allowed to continue. But with the following conditions, Full public audit on build costs, all units to be sold at cost to local residents on an occupier owner basis and a covenant is placed on them that they cannot be used for buy to let, as investment vehicles or sold to individuals from outside the area.

That'll teach them

The building is on Harngey's local list of buildings of interest.

Could any of those living in the ward put some pressure on their ward councillors to ensure that demolition of what remains of the facade is not permitted and that the developers are charged with repairing and/or reinstating the exterior.

The best contact in the ward is Barbara Blake via barbara.blake@haringey.gov.uk. She is on the Sub Planning Committee.

She's the only ward councillor I've ever met or heard from.

It still stands that it's convenient that the fire happened when there was no risk of damaging expensive equipment on the site.
