Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This is an article about Toronto, but there's nothing to suggest that the same wouldn't apply in London, and more precisely, Green Lanes.

Results like this have been replicated in study after study, including studies in London. Not only do most shopper NOT arrive by car at shopping destinations, non-car drivers spend more per head over a month than car drivers do as they are more likely to make multiple visits. Also, something like 30% of the cars you see parked in shopping areas are actually owned by those working at retailers, so again not spending

That's exactly it. It has nothing to do with trade.

The traders made two submissions asking for parking to be preserved, not so that shoppers could park there, but so that their shops and businesses could be supplied as there is no rear access. I think there used to be rear access but it's been built upon....

Given that it wasn't that long ago that we had the lib dems at the local elections proposing 30 minutes of free parking as a policy (obviously with no backup and unable to answer any questions about actual economic benefits) I can't see any changes being made soon.

Haringey is a very car-centric borough compared to most of those surrounding it. I've no idea why that is the case but, in Harringay at least, being heavily influenced by the local traders (who were pushing to have the bus lane on Green Lanes converted to car parking full time until TFL stepped in) does not help.

I'm not bothered personally. More loading bays would make much more sense to me. It's a nightmare for delivery drivers doing drops at HLS.

I know Yasar and maybe some of the restaurants are very keen to maintain street parking as their customers often drive from the other side of London to shop/eat there.

Not true. I have a number of friends who live in south London / Surrey borders and they tell me it takes the same time driving or public transport on average to come and visit.

Perhaps that might not be true for those living within a 5 minute walk of Brixton or Stockwell tube... but most of s london is nowhere near a tube so involves train - tube - train/bus to get to Harringay.
